"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I love giving my little flock treats.  Plants that are pulled from the garden, weeds, fruit and veg scraps.  The summer is the best time for this here at my house.  The last week or so I have been struggling to find treats.  There are no piles of veg trimmings from crops that are being put up.  And my garden is almost completely cleaned and partially replanted for fall.  I am actually looking for beds to be weeded that I haven't gotten around too......mostly they just have rouge grass in them, so the chicks like that.  But soon I will be out of weeds/grass.

So I started reading some lists of TREATS that some ppl THINK are safe/appropriate for their chickens.  It really seems like most of the lists posted are just peoples OPINION though because sometimes I saw opposite things on different lists, LOL!!!  Most of them are things that I give or have given to my chickens at one point or another.  With a few exceptions.  Like strawberry yogurt........huh???  Every flavored yogurt on the market that I have ever seen is LOADED with sugar!  And if its a low sugar one than it has all those artificial sugars in them.  You have to really search to get a plain yogurt.  So I don't get that one.  The one item I was thinking of giving them was cooked beans of any kind......they are cheap and packed with protein.

I decided today to try making something for my darlings and see if they liked it.  So I cooked Lentils, added some chopped veg, a few eggs, the crushed eggshells, and some ground Soy............HOLY COW!!!!!  Some of those mild mannered darlings about took my fingertips off when I offered it to them!!!  I was not thinking it would go like that!  They cleaned their bowl, that's for sure!  Tomorrow I may sprinkle a few mealworms on top (I have the dried ones from TSC)  and I have some oyster shell I may add at some point too.  I do also buy plain, unsweetened and unflavored yogurt.....I may try that out sometime too.

I am really curious what you all give your flock as treats.

The treats that I give them are plenty of fruits and veggies from the local watermelon and fruit man. He stops by every day and tosses over the fence all of the watermelon (during season), other fruit and veggies that he didn't sell for that day. I also feed them eggs and cat food. They love Kit and Kaboodles cat food. I also toss bread from them from time to time. I get free bread at the local bread store.

I gave my birds half of a watermelon today and had forgotten I'd done that so when I went to check and saw bright red all over my sultan girls necks I had a panic moment of wondering what could have possibly tore into them....then I remembered.  :th

That use to happen to me when they first started eating watermelon . What's really funny is when the sheep eat the watermelon and they raise their heads and it looks like they have on red lipstick!!! :lau
