"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I think my girls forgot what rain was! It had been raining lightly until we got home. The bantams were under some light branch cover. But then it started pouring! They just stood there like dodo birds!!

I had to grab an umbrella and go out to the rescue. I snatched up the roo and popped him under one arm and Frizz under the other. The other 2 sillys followed and got the idea. Sheesh. I may not let them out if its looking like rain. The flock of big girls does pretty good with it though. They have the older hens to show the way. At least I didn't wait. I went out right away, so they didn't get soaked or anything.

Forget that, mine get soaked. I tried for a few months to teach them to go under cover than gave up. If there is no thunder most of the time mine will get on top of the car ramp and sit in the rain. If it is really heavy or there is thunder half go under the coop and the other go in the coop.

What treatment are you going to use for the lice? how did you notice them or were you just giving them a onceover.

Even for Silkies and Frizzles?? That's why I was worried about them.

We were clipping wings and I was giving each one a check on the neck feathers. I am going with the neem oil. It will be less stressful for the both of us for me to just do the spot treatment on the hens once a week for a few weeks. A drop under each wing, on the back of the neck and vent area.....all on the skin. Also spray down the cleaned house with soap water the added neem. Really the small amount of soap is just to help with dispersal of the oil. Did you see the link that I had posted earlier. There was some interesting links on that thread and plenty of interesting info. I am a believe it when I see it girl. So......I am going to see if I can prove this method successful or not. With all the health issues I have to deal with already.......... I just could not see me struggling with 15 chickens, plus their whole square footage treating it and them with powders that I had already decided to eliminate from our food chain. So.......the process begins.

Before coming here I wasn't even COMPLETELY aware of issues like this in regards to chickens. Which I should have been. Considering that I raised tropical birds and handfed babies for pets. I did have one bird, a Breeder Cockatiel hen, in that whole time get mites. My guess is because we allowed some of them to be outside during the summer in a screened tent (safe in their cages). So maybe she got them from wild birds???? But at that time the vet told me to put some Sevin in a paper bag then put the bird in and give it a gentle shake. I was NOT keen on that idea at all!!! Not because I thought the Seven might be toxic to me. But I just kept thinking, my sweet bird was going to be breathing it in?! She may have been a breeder hen, and not a handfed pet. But we rescued a bunch of those darlings from a really, really bad situation. UGH! (LONG story) I loved each one of those birds for their own little personality. They are fantastic creatures with lots of love to give. But the vet had little to no experience with the issue and she is the most experienced in "exotics" in this town. BTW rabbits are on the exotic list apparently

.....huh??? Anyway, we had to sell all of our breeders because of the fact that both my kids are allergic to FEATHERS and kept getting sick! But we can still have chickens......just not in the house :)

Even though I have kept chickens for quite a few years there is always more to learn. And I am glad I found this site to help that along.

Sorry for the rambling

I only have one half silkie but I have a friend that has a bunch and just leaves them to do their own thing and doesn't put them up in the rain. I guess I never considered them being any different in regards to the rain.

Ramble on! I had Chickens, horses, One Hog, piglet, calf, Dogs and cats when I grew up. I still like having this site. I don't remember everything we did and things change. I always try the most natural least toxic remedy first. yes I saw the link .Then checked our girls so far so good.

Probiotics, local honey and bee pollen are very helpful for allergies. also chewing the honey comb. If you don't mine me asking what happened to your back / health. I was in a bad car wreck. The few times you.ve spoke about it I could relate an it sounded like issues I have.Pam

No accident that was severe. I was just born with bad genes I guess. Because there want a close eye on those sorts of things when I was young I tore my back up doing hard work. Enjoyable hard work. Now there its a laundry list including scoliosis, blown out discs, stenosis and actually my body is trying to fuse my L4 &5 together with a wide bone spur. I had a dr misread an mri once, referring to my "previous fusion" haha! I had to call and tell them to read it again. I'm pretty sure I would remember a surgery like that. I also have mild hip dysplasia which itself doesn't cause me pain. But it did manage to tear up the lining of my left hip. That is the "Labrum" its the white shiny lining of hips/shoulders. There is a sports med dr in Lake Charles that did a good of a laproscopic fix though. He was able to stitch down the larger tears. Its amazing what they can do now days. When I had it done he had only had approval, from whoever approves procedures for ether general public, for a few months. So far his fix had held up nicely. The best thing for my hip and back though has been getting the Celiac diagnosis. Now that I eliminated the gluten I have thereby reduced the overall inflammation in my body. And getting on the B12 shots is helping with symptoms of that deficiency. The Dr just told me I will pretty much have to keep getting those because its caused by the Celiac. But I am gradually getting things straightened out!! And feeling better. Now I just have to stay within the "limits" ...........I try, hahaha!

Wow! I new things sounded familiar .Except for how we came to these problems . I was sitting at a stop light and was hit by a pickup truck doing 50 M P H. 8 herniated. disc, 7 cervical and L5. c 4 is torn in half. half the length of the disc. So that's where the spur and stenosis are. my soft tissue was severely damaged .its also fusing itself. My fascia is stretched along with my ligaments .I have shoulder dislocation. All the stress on my system caused leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, muscle spasms, of coarse arthritis I've probably forgot something. oh ptsd when I ride in the car if I don't drive. Ten years later I've come to a place where I can manage for the most part. I went on bio identical hormones 6 years ago and they were all out of whack. That has helped me the most out of all the treatments I've had. Testosterone firms my tissue it coats the nerves if you have nerve damage. Its great for that and degenerative disc .from progressing. I try to stay in my limits too. Its hard I was Super active in great shape. My mind didn't get the memo that I have to do things different.Pam

You two are making me hurt. Have either of you looked into some natural remedies? Some old time ones really work. Last time my mom had cancer I got her from over 20 meds down to 4 with ones I had found. Her doctor hates it because for years he told her she could never get off the meds and all her labs are great now whereas before they were all over the place. (No, I did not use any for the cancer itself, just her health problems before it.)
