Towboat Brownies

2 cups sugar
4 beaten eggs
4 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup margarine (I use butter)
1/2 cup cocoa
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts or coconut (we use chopped pecans--haven't tried coconut)

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
Bake in a greased 9x13 pan at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

I write a bimonthly column for American Cocker Network magazine in the persona of my Cocker Spaniel, Winnie called “Just My Perception”. Anybody who’s met Winnie can tell you she has very definite opinions on all sorts of things!

It’s basically an online magazine – I’ll find & post the link to it & also has hard copies available to subscribers. My good Canadian friend, Kelly Ladouceur owns it. I also do some writing for Cocker Classic magazine sometimes ( as myself, not Winnie).

Winnie & her brother Malcolm are both retired show dogs originally from California, bred by my good friend Steph - very well known breeder & judge.

Ok, used blue kote again on Stinker this morning. Where it was still on me, it wasn't on her! I checked her over, and didn't see any "bugs". I can also see the new feathers starting to grow in. I'll try to get a picture tonight and see what you guys think.

On a side note Millie, my catahoula / boxer mix was wanting to look and lick Stinker while I was trying to blue kote her. So, I put a stripe of blue kote down the back of my tan dog. She looked a little puzzled, and then took her stripy self off to explore more interesting things.

I like blue kote! I could get in a lot of trouble with blue kote. I want to blue kote someone!

Any volunteers?

Yes, a show Cocker in full coat is a magnificent animal. My twins have been in "puppy cuts" for several years now. It takes about 3 hours of work per dog to maintain a show coat - trim, bathe & dry.

Well, guess what?
I realized 2 days ago the lavendar Ameracauna broody had kicked the other hen off the nest. She won the broody battle to be the only Mama.

I went out at lunch to bring her some water since she won't leave the coop, & she growled at me like a dog & something about the way she was all hunkered down & fluffed out.....I picked up a stick & she latched on to it like a striking snake & I quickly reached in & flipped her off the nest -- a little black chick w/a yellow spot on top of its' head was looking at me.

She was screaming & pecking & flailing at me w/her wings & I turned her loose & she leaped back on that nest & growled at me again & gave me a serious stink-eye.
So, she is successful.

Now the neat twist is that this chick is a breed variety I don't even have. It is a male Black Copper Marans. How did that happen? Because Russ, where my Cuckoo Marans eggs came from, said he had out-crossed his Cuckoos on his Black Coppers to deepen the dark brown egg color,so there was a chance of a "throwback". Sure enough happened!

I'm sorry that it is a roo, but it is the first chick ever hatched out by a hen & not in my 'bator, so I guess it stays. Maybe we'll luck up & she'll hatch some hens. I hope so.

Now if only my Mama guinea would show up...
