"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Nice to find this thread! Originally from La (Bellechasse to be exact) but now reside in Ms (Kiln). Just a coonass girl who loves being a country girl! And a chicken finatic!! Maybe now I can locate some different breeds I want a little closer to home.
Glad you found us! We are normally a little more active than this.

I have been growing almost all our food, now for about 7 years. I am old as dirt and was on over a dozen medications and a heart monitor, told by several doctors that I would be in a wheelchair for life, within 6 months. I knew I had to do something and had gardened 100% organically, back when my younger daughter was allergic to baby foods in the groceries, among a lot of other things. Doctors through their hands up and said she was allergic to the commercial fertilizers and pesticides and no one made organic baby food. Back then, hardly anyone knew what ORGANIC was, 40 years ago. She is now a mother with a very healthy 11 year old of her own and gardens Organically. She comes and gets rabbit manure for fertilizer, along with wood ashes, etc.
After I got to thinking we are what we eat, I started raising our own meat, too. Now 7 years older, I am on no meds, no cancer, no heart trouble, no wheelchair, not even a cane. We eat well on the animals I raise and am healthier than I was in the 90s, thanks to god and healthier eating. I only eat biblically clean foods, as God made these bodies and told us how to keep them healthier! Shellfish and Pork will shorten your life and make you sick! They are as bas for you as eating a buzzard! I grew up on them, until I learned better. I can get pork and Shrimp, oysters, crabs, crawfish, catfish, etc, for FREE, but won't touch it!! I also do not buy any food I don't grow myself from outside the US and am against GMO foods!!

My family does not eat pork. I haven't touched anything with pork in it for about 8 years now. I like my pigs extra, extra, raw!

I can't stand shellfish, or fish much in general.

The fowl pox is a herpes simplex virus and no amount of antibiotics is going to cure it. Antibiotics is for the secondary infection if they happen to get one. The virus has to run its course like cold sores, cankers what have you.  Pullets usually are more susceptable at POL (puberty) it is a form of Mareks too and this is when they are more prone to developing the symptoms. Mosquitos can transmit the virus but it is just whether or not the immunity of the bird lets show up or not(timing) it is everywhere and no way to avoid it. Its in the air and every itty bitty sparrow or mocking bird ect.. has been in contact with it too  (and this is where Mother Nature comes in to play "the strong survive the weak perish") deal you can vaccinate all you want if so desired but more than likely most still will get it some never even show signs and most will get over it on their own unless they get a secondary infection which you may cure with meds or not some just aren't meant to be here.

Jeff,

Are you saying that vaccinating for pox doesn't really help?? I thought your chickens couldn't get pox if they were vaccinated. Won't be the first or last time I had something wrong. Lol

I eat fish, but it has to have both fins and scales, like Trout, Bass, Tuna, Salmon........Very fresh, please! I do not eat oily fish or catfish(no scales).

Good morning, everybody, and welcome newcomers. We are usually very active, sometimes a page or more an hour, but it's a very busy time of the year for most of us, now that we are getting a little break in the weather! Well, 15 new bunnies downloaded last night and more on the way! I didn't breed them, it was all these broody Does! LOL

And still broody hens and the turkeys, I thought were finished laying, started again, 2 eggs a day and with molting that looks like it snowed overnight, right after Hubby cut the grass!!!

I have 24 rabbits to process, now,(the neighbors don't know it yet, but they are getting early easter rabbits for their freezer to process) 15 the end of the month, 7 the following month and more getting themselves pregnant! I have not matted any rabbits, it was the buck in the next cage, I guess, bt I don't know how he open the latch on his cage, went 3 cages down, then back again, climbed the post, got back in his cage and locked it back?

Just got all my ads posted for turkeys, dead or alive, I counted yesterday, or at least tried to, they don't stand still for long, and 43 are too many to winter over. 10 mature toms and at least 8- 9 month old toms have to go, plus 8=9 month old hens to pair with the toms to get them sold will have to be sacrificed too. I planned on processing the first 40+# tom and making ground turkey and maybe sausage 2 days ago, but tripped and fell and could not stand to move my hip joint for 2 days. It's feeling better today, so I might tackle a dozen rabbits, but getting bat in the head with those giant strong tom wings, if I can't get out of the way fast enough is out of the question, for this old woman, at least till next week. I go to the doctor for my annual checkup tomorrow.
Do you guys get these "important information" notices that SS only pays $250 to bury you, so you need to come take care of your final arrangements, now? I guess they know I am older than dirt, cause I get one every week or so. I started sending them back, unopened, so I got one yesterday about being cremated!

Don't they understand that I don't plan to die, so why do they want to bury me? If I should ever die, there's a big trackhoe in the back yard that have buried a bunch of horses and cows, so it certainly be capable of burying me, too!

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed recently. Not able to read the few hundred posts that I've missed.

My chickens have slowed down production drastically in the past couple of weeks. Nothing has changed in their diet. Could this already be from shortening of days?

I was getting 2 dozen a week now I'm getting a half a dozen a week.

My thoughts:
1. Calcium issue - feed oyster shells
2. laying the yard - if they are, the dog is eating the eggs cause i don't find any evidence
3. lack of protein - there have been no changed in diet except that the week before this happened my neighbors were giving them an excessive amount of watermelon rinds.
4. Moody - the just don't feel like laying
5. Molt - I haven't seen any unusual amount of feathers on the floor of the coop and none of them appear to have bald patches

any suggestions?
