I have 6 on strike and its got me peeved lol

Time of year & late molt did me in I think. Their feed is top notch, they're happy healthy and I have only one trouble maker...I'm thinking that one hen (not a head hen either) is causing a lot of stress picking on everyone

bully.

But for the time being I hope just the season change is stalling some girls.
I apologize in advance if this has been discussed recently. Not able to read the few hundred posts that I've missed.

My chickens have slowed down production drastically in the past couple of weeks. Nothing has changed in their diet. Could this already be from shortening of days?

I was getting 2 dozen a week now I'm getting a half a dozen a week.

My thoughts:
1. Calcium issue - feed oyster shells
2. laying the yard - if they are, the dog is eating the eggs cause i don't find any evidence
3. lack of protein - there have been no changed in diet except that the week before this happened my neighbors were giving them an excessive amount of watermelon rinds.
4. Moody - the just don't feel like laying
5. Molt - I haven't seen any unusual amount of feathers on the floor of the coop and none of them appear to have bald patches

any suggestions?
Yes 'tis the season where things change up and stuff. and you know just how delicate those little ladies systems are. Anything that throws them off a little bit usually turns out to be big deal. LOL for them. "outta kilter" as Granddaddy would say LOL They will soon get back into a rythym again till something else changes up, like cool temps then its the same thing all over again. Its hard to keep them satisfied for sure.

I feel a little silly how excited I am about a green egg!

My youngest, Matthew was so excited, you would have thought it was Christmas morning. He then went out to the coop to get Edna and tell her what a good job she did. On a side note, I had to fuss at Matthew that he can't ride his bike while carrying the chickens!!!!! He has some that he always has tucked under his arm. My husband just shakes his head at us.

Good luck on your colored eggs...hope they come soon!

I still get excited over blue and green eggs. Congratulations!

Quick question: My crew was born beginning of April and just started laying. When will they likely go through their first molt?

Generally 18 months then anually from then on out. Of course there are always variables to this, such as life goes and you may have some go through like a mini molt sorta this winter, of all times huh? LOL

Thanks for the info. I'm sure if they go through a mini molt in the winter, we can blame it on a man, right?

Because, really, aren't most problems caused by men?

Hey all...have you guys checked out the BYC contest moulting pictures thread? Some of those poor chickens are hysterical looking...

I hope mine don't ever look that bad, I might forget and throw them straight into the pot. One of the posts had a link to a picture on another site that looked like what mine do after plucking.
