"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Have a question, ran into a friend yesterday that purchased 8 RIR chicks from another person back in February and they or not laying. They were about 6 weeks old when he purchased them. I have not seen them but he said they or hens, I was thinking maybe he got 8 roo's. Anyone else ever had this problem? and if so what can be done to help them start laying? FREZER CAMP is on order if they don't start soon

Have they been de-wormed? What are they eating? Do you have pics of them?

I don't like crowds either but the amount of money that I save during those Black Friday deals is unbelievable. I saved more than $100.00 last year buying the down comforters and gel pillows. And it only took me 2 hours. I only had 1 problem with one ignorant lady in the store. She started pulling stuff out of the bin before time and I explained to her that it wasn't time. She said that she didn't care. So, I told her that I would call the manager for that department if she pulled out one more item and he would make her put it back and possibly put her out of the store. So she got smart and told me to do what I had to do and continued to stack her buggy with comforters. So guess what KRAZY ME did? Yep, I called the manager of the department, who was one of my best friends since junior high school and who I already was working that day ;) , and I told him what she did. And he did exactly what I said he would do. He made her put ALL of the comforters back and told her that if she did it again, then he would have her removed from the store. After that, I didn't hear "PEEP" from her. :gig I just looked at her with that "Just do it again " look.

As far as the meat, Super 1 has a good meat sale going on but I don't know if you all have a Super 1 in your area.

:lau :gig   :yuckyuck      SEE, there's always one in every group that's a POO STIRRER (spell check told me to spell it this way...is it right?)!!!!

I welcome the Poo Stirrers because when they dish it out, I can throw it right back at them. ;) I love a good stir party.:gig I try not to bring any matches to any parties though.

If they are hens I would think they are laying just not where he can find them. That's what happened to me with my first RIR's.

There are many reasons why they are not laying. My RIR's were hatched in February and started laying the end of August. They are late layers with large combs. Right now is molting time so even if they started laying the laying could be slower than normal. Things to look for:
Are there combs bright and large?
Are there any depressions in the nest box?
Are they loud?
Are there worms?
Do they have enough water?
Are there any signs of illness?
The big one: Do they free range?

Unless he was completely dooped it is unlikely that they are all roo's. The average on straight run is 60% / 40%, they say 50/50 but from what I have seen boys are more common than not. If they free range even a little they are hiding a nest somewhere. Not enough water will slow growth and laying age. The breed gets loud when they start laying. All illnesses bring a host of problems on their own. My bet would be hiding a nest, and believe me they are crafty as to where they can hide one!

I don't know of someone mentioned it.......if the chickens are cooped up and have too much shade that made contribute. I hadn't gotten around to removing a tarp that was on the sunny side of my coop. This new flock just wasn't laying for WAY longer than any other flock I have had. It only took 48hrs after removal of that tarp fore the eggs to start coming. It was a DUH moment on my part since length of daylight does have plenty to do with if they want to lady or not.

I will have to catch back up reading posts. I have been hard at work. A batch of Garbanzo beans just finished up in the pressure cooker. And I finished cleaning and putting the 1/4 bushel of banana peppers from my garden through my chopper. I still am going to char grill some poblanos and jalapenos and put onions through the chopper i am going to make some kind of hot peppery relish. I'm winging it today in the recipe dept.

Now I'm thinking about the Black Friday sales this year. I didn't get a chance to score the fire pits last year because I was loading up on gel pillows and down comforters, so I want to makes ure that I get my fire pit this year. I may have to recruit someone to help me because I want to get more comforters this year. I will start my list so that I can refer back to it.

Fire Pits
Down Comfortors
Gel Pillows
Pyrex 24-pc. Bake & Store Set

* I hope to add more as it gets closer to Black Friday or Brown Thursday (when they start a day early).

Anyone else ever adventure off into the Krazy Black Friday sales? Am I the only nut?
