"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Does anyone have bats? I have really been thinking about getting a bat house so that I can attrack bats to my yard. Don't judge me. :p

Just think about it............ a glass of wine...........fire pit burning.................bat watching............. and gun by side for opossum shooting. That could work right? It doesn't take much to please me at all. :lau

We've seen them in the tall trees down at the bayou. I don't want them any closer to the house than that!

I'm really interested in them to help control the mosquitoes.

Hey guys, relatively new to BYC and raising chickens.  We have 4 Easters, 4 Australorps, 2 Buff Orps, & 2 Production Reds.  Got them from Thibodeaux's in Abbeville back in April.  They are all doing great and we love having them.  3 have started laying eggs (2 light green and one olive colored).  I would like to get a couple hens that lay white eggs.  I don't want to raise any chicks right now.  Does anyone know where I might be able to buy a couple hens that are laying age or at least a few months old?  I live in Indian Bayou, west of Maurice.  Thanks for the help.  Love this site.

I figured you did, but my SIL in Madison had a horrible experience w/them getting into their attic & I've had the fun of one getting into a rented condo when we were in Destin one year - it's bad enough when the squirrels got into our attic, I sure don't want to go through that with bats! I'll stick w/our purple martins!

I found a few bat houses online.

I could name the bat house, "Who Dat Bats". Get it? Who Dat?

I think I"m going to do it and get a bat house and see how many bats I can attract to the yard.

I would place the Who Dat Bat house way away from the house so they couldn't get in and hope that would work.

DID YOU KNOW...
Bat droppings, called guano, are also beneficial. Guano is nitrogen-rich and is considered an excellent fertilizer. Some scientists have even found particular enzymes from bacteria in guano that can be used as cleaning agents in laundry soaps and other cleaners.

Interesting story.

So, they can fit in an opening the size of a quarter? WOW !!! Tha'ts small. And why till it with foam spray insulation? The numbers tripled? I think I need to read up on bats before I vetnure off into luring some my way.

Can't wait to hear how you relocated them.

The foam spray expands an fills any holes or cracks. We used it on our house to keep them out. We left one opening so it would be easer to trap them. Their like bees they send out a few to find a new place for their colony, Once they find a place they tell the rest come on over.

I'll try to make a long story short. Once you have one entrance you can start trapping. Bats have to drop and catch air to fly. So we made what would look like a basket ball hoop out of wood at the top plastic bag duct taped to wood hung down a foot and a half with a small hole at the bottom. then we hung a 5 gallon bucket under that. Hole in plastic bag over and in bucket. Top of hoop hung under bat entrance/ exit. So Bat comes out falls in hoop slides down plastic into bucket. they can't crawl out of bucket. So every morning bucket full of bats. Ron takes bats If I remember correctly at least 10 miles away or they will come right back. He would stop on bridge by overpass an empty bucket. On overpass because bats need to drop to fly. This went on for about two weeks before they were all gone. One morning he forgot to empty bucket so that after noon we went to toss off bridge well he got a nose full of guano To this day if you bring up bats he goes right to the memory of that smell and says he can still smell it.:lau Then we filled that hole. no more bats.Pam
