Does anyone have suggestions about white egg laying breeds for beginners? I don't have any white egg layers (don't want any) but someone I am helping get started wants a few and doesn't know what breeds lay them.

The only white egg layers I ever had were Blue Andalusians & they are so neat! Pretty, as all blue birds they hatch blue – black – splash – they are small but lay a large egg and the heat doesn’t faze them one bit. I only have one left – a black hen named Carmen – she is old now but still lays a couple times a week. They are good fliers and foragers. The roosters are mean – at least the ones I had were. They don’t go broody. I crossed Carmen on my Welsummer roo & got her daughter Carmelita, who lays a big pale blue egg – very pretty! I hatched the Blues from a breeder here on BYC, (forget her name) they were not hatchery stock.

You guys just crack me up. So much joy in this site and I've just found you. I live 20 miles east of Shreveport. Anybody out there close to me? Haughton. I'm so totally new that I haven't even ordered my chicks yet. Saving my money and preparing though. I plan on ordering 25 chicks in late January. I'll have my hoop coop ready by then. I do have my brooder set up. I want to get white's even though they are a predator problem. White Dorkings, Delawares, Light Sussex. (and maybe a black frizzle cochin bantam.) Nothing like staying on target.

Ron, I've was thinking of you and your Saints. My SIL is a Asst Coordinator ( the money man for donations for football team) for Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport and he's leaving Wed for the Dome in New Orleans for the play offs. Now you talk about football crazy. Six months of the year he only opens his mouth to talk football. He's one of the good guys. Love him.
I live with my daughter Aimee , SIL Clint and grandson AJ. We moved to a couple of acres last year and I have the room for a big garden and chickens. And I have never been happier. I never thought I would be so enthralled with chickens. But y'all understand, don't you?
Aimee was a corporate employee at a local hospital for 12 years when we decided to start thinking about moving. She found a new passion and it changed her life totally. She opened Haughton Dog Grooming and Boarding and man, she has never looked back. Adores it. Well, I've rambled enough. Nice to meet everybody. Linda

Morning La-yers! Another chilly one here but at least the sun’s supposed to come out today. I had a whirlwind weekend. It started off sad as the father of a good friend passed away. Then my cousin from Miami came w/her Mom to visit my Mom. She stayed with us & we had a blast – we were up past midnight Saturday! She is a dog person like me & shows in agility.

Jim is heading up to Wisconsin to visit his Mom & siblings. It’s supposed to be -8 there tomorrow night & snow all week. Have fun Jim!

Now I’m counting down till Friday when my NY friend flies in for a quick weekend visit. I’m sure we won’t get much sleep Fri or Sat! She leaves Sun afternoon & I’ll collapse until time to head back to work Monday. Tomorrow at staff meeting we’re having a birthday party for my boss. Christmas? Oh yes, it is right around the corner, isn’t it?

Welcome to BYC ! Let me let you know it's Ron if there is no Pam at the end of the post . We share BYC ! Looking forward to seeing your fuzzy buts when you get them. Dogs are another passion of mine. I love it when you get to make a living out of what you love. Congratulations to you and Linda. All chickens are targets for predators I guess white is easier to spot. FIreworks Over Bridge

Over 300,000+ Christmas lights and 100 plus riverbank set pieces are on every night at dusk through January 6, 2014. Downtown attractions include carriages tours through the historic district. Shops and restaurants open late. All events take place in the Landmark Historic District along the Cane River Lake and along the Cane River Lake south of Natchitoches.

Anyone going to Natchitoches, LA to see the Christmas lights?

Eh, I dunno. We use to live in Natchitoches until about 1 1/2 ago. It's pretty much the same thing every year. A lot of the decorations they put up over the river are the same ones as when I was a toddler. It can be grande for someone who isn't use to it though. They normally have horse drawn carriages they will pull you around the block with this time of year- kind of expensive but can be enjoyable. The fireworks are good, but if you go, go early to get a decent spot and make sure you don't get where those big trees will block your view. Also parking can be a huge pain, and the traffic afterwards crazy. Some of our college friends live near Front Street. Did you know the police told them they had to move their car by morning or it would be towed? They were fine with complying until they learned it was so strangers could park in front of their house and they were expected to park elsewhere and walk home in the cold so a tourist could park there. The city really treats the residents like crap when holidays come around. They want that tourist money.....



WAIT WHAT?!!!! Just read the schedule you posted. ADMISSION TO FRONT STREET?!!!!! WHAT? NO! D**** if they haven't gotten greedier. Over 20 years I have been going to that and now they are charging to walk on the street?! let me change my maybe to no!
