Holy Smokes. This girl is wooorrrn out! It actually turned out to be a nice mid day for me and I got some chores done outside along with some visiting with the hens, observing and figuring out some logistics. I found out who was laying the pink eggs. Now it doesn't surprise me at all, considering its the hen that I always have thought of as our mentally challenged hen (no disrespect meant at all, she really is slow). We had babies out for some fun while I got some leaves raked. Which is amazing that I can do that at this time of year and not be in a coma of pain. I only did an area about 12ft x 20ft. But there is no way I could have done that last winter, or the winter before. So that is really cool. I am trying to practice the "move it or loose it" line of thought.

I had started putting the light on our hens so we could continue to have eggs for holiday cooking and everyday use. I shut the lights at 9pm. Well, one night we were out and busy and didn't get their few extra hours of light. I was awakened at the ridiculous hour of 4:30 am by the roosters VERY awake constant crowing!!! It happened one other time like this too. It seems this little guy is needing X number hours of sleep, and if the lights keep him awake until about 9pm then he is still sleepy until sun up. But if he goes to sleep early, he rises way earlier than any sane person would want to be awake for.

I also am glad that I have worms

That sure is fun to say. Here is a picture of the teeny tiny worms.......you can see 3 golden colored ones that are trying to go down in the feed to get away from the light. I have transferred all the adults to the other container.

Here is a pic of some of the adults. They sure do like the underside of the egg carton.

Congrats on those little bun bun babies!

Julie, just be careful! And show us pictures :)

And I hope everyone is having a good week and making progress on your Christmas list. I need to write a list in the morning.........so I know where I stand. Time for a few hrs of sleep!!!
I wish I could say how cute but I just can’t quite go there, lol!

My chickens keep raiding the cats food. Can it hurt them? And is it normal for them to want to eat it?

Nope, it won't hurt them. The high protein is good for them. Yes, it is normal. When I feed my outside cats, I have to act as the cat food guard because the chickens AND ducks will run off the cats to eat their cat food. In fact, I mix cat food in with their regular feed sometimes. And sometimes when I'm outside, I throw out cat food for them as a treat. They prefer the cat food over their own food. :/

You are right. I have no problem shooting it but by the time I get the gun it's gone. But I will go ahead and buy a trap. Then shoot it in the trap.

I use to have that same problem until I bought another high powered pellet gun to keep in the chicken house and feed storage building, so it's already out there when I make my rounds.

So we have 6 maybe 7 baby NZs. Hard to get a count not disturbing them. I researched Soooooo Frickin much about breeds, breeders, husbandry, health issues, weaning, choosing breeders/meat or pets lol and even butchering. Shoot I have half this litter sold before they were born...yet can't remember a dammed thing about birth to weaning! Omg. I need that "thud" smiley inserted here.
I had a lop when I was young, she had babies the week I bought her! I let her handle them and she did awesome. When they started eating with her we weaned them to a grow out pen.
They were pets tho. Suppose we could have eaten them lol but at the time I was a valley girl in Cali not a Southern farmer in Louisiana!
I'd think these NZs are the same tho right? Mamas got it for a few weeks? When can the young be examined without her freaking out?
I never had a creature not need assistance lol cats, dogs, pigs, hamsters even pet rats wanted help or required assistance due to a cord wrapped around an appendage or even removing still births. But they were pets, these NZs are still warming up to us. The babies are HUGE! As big as hamsters!:(
I know rabbits hate predators, as much as my aussie loves each animal here and thinks all babies are her baby's, we have kept her and all creatures out of the rabbitry. I wash up before handling does because I had a lop so scared of a puppy once it dropped dead upon sight. I know thats not normal but man it still burned that image into my head lol
But the does know me and my treats, how cautious do I really have to be? We don't wanna lose litters due to rookie mistakes in the 1st few weeks and I get conflicting info about needing to count young, check on each one and other info saying don't touch.

In moderation most like anything else. Cat food and dog food have a more concentrated sodium amount in it than chickens bodies need(protein is a bit much in large doses too) (and too size is relative in all things), an also 2/3/6/8 lb chickens aren't as much mass as a 5/10/15lb cat or 30/50-100 lb dog. A little bit of cat food thrown out ever so often as a treat is fine, but a constant supply of all they can/and will gorge is not! Their excretory systems can't rid the body of the salt and will result in renal failure/problems. I don't want (don't let) my expensive prized one and only's nowhere near or around anything but chicken feed. The dogs get fed a ration of feed 2 times daily therefore none to be left around and NO cats here, the dogs don't allow them to take up residence here.(look to much like critters)LOL So no worries there either.

Jeff

LOL I see Terri and Julie and I clash a bit here but the key word is in MODERATION LOL

Luvmychicken: no pic posted. There is a thread on what rabbits do you have? There is someone that posts there called Bunnylady. Maybe you can send her a PM. She is super knowledgable.

I had a big scare tonight. I went to a church function before dark so as soon as I got home at 8:00 I went out to close the coops. They always go into their coops on their own. As soon as I entered the yard I heard something scurry through the leaves. When I walked to the coops 3 were missing. Never happened before. I called them and none came. I found them and they were okay but they roosted high up away from the coops. I put them in the coops. I looked all around and didn't find anything but I am convinced that something scared them away. I also found a broken eaten egg. I just knew I would find dead bodies. Horrible.
Glad everyone was ok.
