"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

If we are going out of state for feed there is a brand/mill called Lone Star in TX that sells aprox 45lb bags of organic for $24. They use kg as a way to measure not pounds. One of my local feed stores sells their brand though I haven't tried it yet.

I bet we could get a feed store to order some organic feed for us if we had enough people interested.

Now if that price were co-op-ed and went lower, then we might be interested. But we are on a small scale here for sure. We just cannot afford more than $21.00 per 50lb bag of layer pellets, max. And chick feed is even lower than that at Petrus. I know its not organic there from Petrus, but thats what we can afford.

I pay $9 for a 50# bag at my feed store but it is not organic. My spoiled brats have tried everything at TSC and two local feed stores and won't eat even the pricey brands. They seem to like this cheap stuff, the sad thing is besides the protein level I know nothing about what is in it. I picked it up one time as the only feed in town that I could find and they loved it.

@kuntrygirl , Do you have some sort of alarm that alerts you to any talk of wine or fire? I swear we just need to stop asking where you are when you don't post and just say wine and fire and you'll come running!

I started eating local raw honey a few years ago and my allergies (dust, etc) are gone! It worked for me! I always keep some on hand. I put some in my tea, on my biscuits and will have 1 tablespoon a day as well.
An old country remedy for persons with allergies and/or colds, used by my grandparents, that i still use if the following:
Cup of hot tea, 2 spoonfulls of local honey, one Bulliards Louisiana Supreme peppered vinegar-one pepper placed in the cup after squeezing into the cup(or another brand, its the pepper that helps), and a quarter of a real lemon squeezed into the cup. Cold will be gone in a couple of days.

Also add cayenne pepper to more meals, on meats, spaghetti etc. OR take cayenne pepper pills, one just before you take the first bite of a full meal. My father has a bad heart, and these pills from are part of his daily meds! So when I read up on them, I realized my grandparents had been taking them all along. Good for blood circulation and cleaning out your veins, as well as teaches your body to rid itself of the sensitivity to grow ulcers. I started taking them and 4 months later had no bleeding ulcer anymore! Off prescribed meds!

Okay guys, I am needing to introduce another breed to my flock....or just raise a breed apart from my babies...for meat. It is taking way too long for my chickens to get big enough for slaughter. paying more in feed than buying a chicken at the store. I WILL not get any of the white Cornish that are hormonally
induced to grow in 6 weeks. So, any other ideas?
SO>...do I blend them with my existing mixed flock? Or do I buy some of ??? kind and raise them separately then slaughter when they are ready?
Recommendations please:

I went to the fruit stand today and bought their best local raw honey. Also, sometimes after dinner I want something sweet. I am hoping a spoon full will take care of that. I've been eating dates to satisfy it. This year will be super healthy.

Where do they sell those so that I won't buy any of those? None of my cornish are hormonally induced. I guess mine are lucky. :D

They are not hormonally induced to grow faster, they are cross breed with larger breeds to grow faster. If you allow them to grow to full size instead of culling at 6-8 weeks you will find they have some giant genes in their line somewhere. My Jersey Giants have reached 30-40 pounds in pullet year where as cornish are stated to be culled at 8-10 pounds. I find that the cornishx's grow slower than some of my pure breed giants do.
