For adult birds, how cold would you add a little heat source?
Amercaunas are cold tolerant they will be fine! In grit magazine only a problem at Sub-zero. Pam

How did you wind up in Louisiana? Pam
Thank you so much Pam. Whew. What would I do without you? I wasn't sure about the Amercaunas but I was pretty sure my RIR would be fine and the Black Stars. This is my Amercaunas first winter. They are very good about huddling together in a protected corner.
Most people seem to use wheat germ for the bedding. I won't go near the wheat germ. So I am using a combo of grain based items. I just mix it up with a like an equal part ratio of each item. Ground oats (I use the cheapest I can find), some very fine rice bran meal that came from the feed store(was inexpensive), bird seed mix(the kind with only the small seeds), and then the higher protein chick crumble food. It doesn't seem like it has too be any exact bedding as long as its grain based, fresh and it will probably be easier if its mostly finer ground stuff so later when you want to sift out the worms the bedding will go through the sifter. I may not add any more of the birdseed because of just that.I just bought worms to try and start them. They are expensive at petsmart how long from starting them till you had enough to feed some to your flock? Any advice on bins or what food they like better etc.
I don't know if you saw my post but Williams Sonoma is having a sale plus 20% off sale pricing I buy from them at sale time. They are expensive. They have their gluten free mixes on sale for 4.something they are 20. Regular price. I know you like to make everything from scratch. Sometimes it's nice to have a good mix when you need something but aren't feeling up to baking from scratch. The mixes I've bought from them have all been really good.

I was pregnant and it was August up north...really close to 1st snow (snow breaks my heart lol hate it, its a beautiful, stunning sight...in pictures lol)
We were torn on where to flee from cold...outta the Southern states I have relatives scattered but not close relatives. I was really sick at the time, mis-diagnosed celiac then got sicker fast (cancer of the cervix but we didn't know that was the problem until getting here and 6 months pregnant with the boy who docs kept telling my wasn't gonna make it to term) I just knew winter was coming and we thought I'M OUTTA THERE. sick or not.
In Louisiana I had one life long friend here at the time, my husband is a contractor. My friend had a house that needed remodeled fully before selling it. Friend said come live in the house and remodel it, "try out Louisiana in August" first lol. We lived in it, remodeled it, it sold and we stayed. We love it.
It's been an uphill struggle for us since day one and we never look back except in awe once in awhile that were at this point![]()
Great story!! If you can put up with being pregnant in August. Here your native at heart!! Glad your here. Pam

I think you did see that post about the WS sale. I haven't been able to respond to some posts because we have been so busy with these kids home all the time!!! Is Christmas vacation over yet?? I will miss them the minute I drop them off and then I take a breathBut since its after the holidays we are pinching pennies, so shopping for extras has to wait. Thanks though for the heads up!

I would be more worried about primrose she has no one to share body heat with. RIR'S are also on the cold tolerant list.. I would put something over the outside of her crate to help hold her body heat in. Pam
