Definitely low water content in our already humid environment. I even had trouble using sweet potato slices. I now open that drawer type of Sterlite container a little ways so that it vents and doesn't hold moisture in there. And Carrots seems to work best for me as far as not getting moldy. My other two containers are like this, so they have plenty of ventilation. We are just using what we already have had around here.
 
We candled our eggs in the bator and have 11 that are swimming/jumping around.

I don't thing the air cells has reduced enough. So we reduced the water in there for now.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good hydrometer/thermometer? We tried one and it reads temps that are WAY different than the other thermometer in their.
 
I dodged a bullet today and tomorrow I will have to fix the roof and door on the coop because of it. I went out a little late to close up the chickens and thought I lost a chick so I turned around to call the chick (they respond to the same noises I use to call the dogs) and saw the biggest raccoon I have ever seen across the yard. He just looked at me and slowly walked away. This is not one of the neighborhood raccoons (all the size of small dogs), this thing came up to just above my knee! It was in the chicken yard and had every chance to take my flock with the door open but didn't even touch it. The roof of my coop is so high and has nothing to climb up near it that it is just laying on there, now I am going to attach it. The door only has a hook lock because our normal raccoons are small and can't reach the bottom of the door much less the latch. I have raccoon proof latches but got to busy or forgot to put them on. I moved them for the night and tomorrow I will fix everything. I am counting my blessings right now! I have seen raccoons all my life and never thought they got that big!

Wow! You have somebody looking out for you! Time to put out an X-large raccoon trap! I hope to never see one that big!

Sounds like the ones that come out of our woods. Scary they don't run away either. I wonder if it wass a momma? hope not. Pam

You know, I have a lot of traps around but I don't think I have any that big. I either need bigger traps or bring a gun with me at night. Like I said, he is not a regular of the neighborhood. I would rather trap it because of it's size. If I can there is a big campground near Lake Charles where they are protected. I am not an avocite for keeping raccoons alive but I have never seen one that big and I must say it is impressive. I'll take pictures when I see it again. Does anyone have any advise on what to bait a trap with?

Tuna or canned cat food. That's what I've found gets 'em.

Should I put my layers (3) in with the meaties? As far as size they're about the same but the meaties are heavier but on the ground and my layers roost up high. The hoop coop holds heat in the roof better than the layer coop. And the meaties produce a lot of heat helping that...will it be so cold my ameraucanas might not make it?!
I thought for a moment to do that (put them in with the meaties) but didn't figuring I never worried before. Now, I'm scared for my Blue layers! Doh! I've made errors with cold tolerance before :(

I've been reading The Chicken Whisperer on Facebook. I have added no heat source to my coop. I have made sure that there is no draft, but ventilation. When I let them out on really cold mornings, I throw some higher protein "snacks" and maybe some warm oatmeal. None of my birds are breeds that have a problem with our temps. I also have an Ameraucana and an EE. I've been reading that they don't truly become "cold" adapted if you add a heat source. I am only repeating what I've been reading. I am TOTALLY open to learning...I have MUCH to learn. Have I qualified enough?
