Also I think Guineas are kind of like Miracle Whip, you love them or hate them. I am going to admit now that there is NO way I am going to own a flock of those noisy buggers. Nope. Nuh-Uh. Not for me.  I wouldn't jump into that water without lots of research.

Yes, they need to be feathered before putting them out, especially at this time of year. I wait about 6-8 weeks. More for more fragile or slower feathering breeds.

2 hens mean 17, a flock means 5 flocks because can rarely have one type of chicken...its madness, you will love chicken math. Better than any algebra class lol

I am interested in EEs, Gold-laced Wyandottes, Plymouth Barred Rock, Rhode Island Reds...What's chicken math? I want 4 total, 2 of them being EEs. I'm so excited to have beautiful eggs! An Olive Egger would be cool at some point.

Thanks guys! Well, here are some of my questions/concerns so far:
1) The coop is used. Should I clean it? And how? The roost is covered but there's a section of it with no roof(just chicken wire). Am I supposed to put litter(haven't decided on pine shavings or sand yet) in the uncovered part?
2) I have picked the breeds I want to start with: (2)EEs, (2) Barred Plymouth Rock. I am bummed that even the online hatcheries have minimums of 15 chicks this time of year, so I'm waiting to see where I can get the chicks I want. I want all hens.
3) I am SO afraid of snakes. How do I keep them out???

I'm sure there are more but I will leave it at that for now. Bugglesmommy-You are in Leesville?

1 Yes I would clean the coop It would be a good time before you get chicks. Bleach and water should kill anything that might be in there.The point of a coop is saftey and shelter from weather. I would put roofing over the chicken wire.
2 You will find what you want here if not here your local feed & seed.
3 I have seen snakes in my yard from time to time. I never had any in my coop. I don't have them in my yard now that my dogs are grown.

Yes, I am in Leesville. The coop looks nice, but I do want to warn you that the wire used there is chicken wire. Predators like racoons, possums, dogs and coyotes and so on will go through it like butter. You may want to consider reinforcing it with something stronger like hardware cloth. I would definitely clean and disinfect it just in case.

You flunked animal math period! Just as a point of interest to those of us that don't require a full size farm yet, what was your starting number? Do meaties count? I mean, they don't stay long term. If they do then someone has poured oil on the already slippery slope we are standing on.

My starting number was only 25 chickens and it was history after that.

I count meaties for 8 weeks and then the number reduces. I had 6 meat birds that lived for 4 years, so I had to count them.

My dear sweet innocent Shauna. So you only want 4 hens? Chicken Math will happen. I live in a subdivision that I found out doesn't even allow chickens after I already had 3, the city ordinance limit. "Oh, I would never have more than 3", I said as I stomped my pretty little foot to prove my point. I'm at 5 and yearning like an addict to add "just one more, an RIR to keep Primrose company," I said as I again stomped my foot for emphasis. Now I talk about selling the house I built 10 years ago as my forever house just so I can have all I want. That is "chicken math" that irresistible urge for more, always more. If your hubby is counting on you only having 4, we have members of this thread that can counsel you on how to manage that and maintain a happy marriage. A lot of times the hubby fall for chicken math too, then you become a farm. Lol
