"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Im looking for the rhode island reds new hamshire reds prouduction reds and red sex links for the eggs id like to get some allready ready to lay but if id id have to get them from chicks id be more than happy to go that route to

Ok. Amercaunas not happy about their confinement, but the other girls are hanging at their coop and very upset they can't get out lol. Chicken sympathy. I noticed their poop has changed. Instead of little thin worm shaped poop, they now have larger blob poop. I think they have started laying. I'll also check their vents. Thanks for that tip. They are not getting out until I have an egg.

I haven't seen the big raccoon since that night, I think he may have been just passing threw. I still have the little raccoons that stay under the house on really cold days but they don't mess with my chickens and I built my coop with them in mind. I have had them take an egg or two that got laid in the yard but that is it. I still haven't gotten rid of that hawk and really didn't want anymore chickens until I did but this new rooster is working out great. If I don't have any losses for a while then chicken math will start all over again.

It was interesting trying to teach this rooster about coops, ramps, and runs. His old owner gives the choice of coop or outside and free ranges everyone. I think he was one of the ones that just liked it better outside. He still hasn't figured out that there is food and water in the coop. He is twice the size of my Jersey Giants so it was funny to watch him in the run...I planed for smaller birds. When he flaps his wings it sounds like someone is shaking out a rug. My coop is separated from the run I was using and yesterday instead of going in his crate to be carried to the coop he hopped in my lap for scratches.

Congratulations. By experience, keep your eye on the RIR. I have the same setup: 2 of 2 breeds and one RIR. I found out the hard way that it's true: birds of a feather flock together. My poor Primrose had to learn to protect herself bec she doesn't have an RIR friend. It's worth it if you are able to get her one now. Primrose is my avatar and my baby, but she is a bad pecker and if she had spurs she would have really hurt some people. I think it was bec she doesn't have an RIR buddy. Others on this thread concur. I still want to get her a buddy but I'm pushing the envelope at 5 bec I'm not allowed any.
I'm definitely keeping an eye out. I noticed a little feistiness at first but she pecked back and seems to be holding her own really well. She's pushing the others out of the way haha. She's the biggest one and she walks with her head up tall. I will keep watching!!

So glad your new rooster is fitting in. Glad to hear the others are doing well also. Will "rooster" have a name?

The little one wants to call him Snowball because we were talking to someone that was going to give us a Silkie rooster they named Snowball and I promised it to him. Something happened and I never was able to get him. Casanova, Bullet, DohDoh, and the meaties were mine, the rest of the flock is his. Oh wait... that means I only have 1 chicken, they rest belong to my son.... time for more...

Welcome to you new head hen! If she keeps that spot she will do great, my one and only gold star is my head hen and shared duties with one other before. If she looses the head hen spot there will be issues with not having another like her and you'll have to treat her like Primrose until you can get another.

Chicken Math!!
As far as the chickens go, it sounds like my house. My kids "called dibs" on which birds were theirs when they were chicks. My oldest only wanted the Polish. The funny thing is, the Polish LOVE my youngest. My oldest is not a big "chicken person". They "freak him out a little"--his words LOL.... I "called dibs" on only a couple. My youngest is constantly trying to "claim my chickens". It's gotten a little cut throat at our house. LOL...

I haven't exactly figured out who my head hen is. HMMMMM....It might be my LouLou. Prim and her granddaughter are coming out to the house this weekend, I'll see if she can help me figure it out. I feel a little silly not knowing.
