"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Bulls scare me!!! Be careful!

Do you have any pictures of the filly? What happened with the eye? I must have missed that.

My last foal due this year was born with only one eye. She's a sweet little thing. Born last Sunday. I will post a picture when I stop running later today. The vet said that they will eventually sew the eye closed.

Do you have Quarter horses?

I have one quarter horse. I also keep racing quarter horse brood mares. I have eight mares right now and was just asked if I would like to keep four recipient mares...of course I said YES!! A recipient mare is implanted through invitro. I will get the mares once the foal they carry registers a heartbeat.

Hi, Cracked. Funny names the boy's came up with for the filly. What happened with the eye. Sounds like she can still race. How did your girls weather the storm? When I went to close the hutch I was missing two. They were under the shelter I built. They were happy for me to rescue them. I can't imagine a bull in your pasture!!! Ouch!

The filly was born with out the eye being fully developed. The vet happened to be out that morning checking mares (breeding season has started). We had him look at the filly and he said that the eye was not fully developed. She could still race and that they would eventually sew the eye closed.

The girls did ok with the cold weather. I did end up running a heater during the coldest nights. We are back on our normal "no heat" now.

When I heard the bulls go through the fence, I must admit I started cussing like a sailor!! I jumped on a four wheeler and rushed out to close the pasture gate. The mares were all up by the barn fence, because it was getting close to feeding time. They finally got the bulls back through the hole in the fence, but ran them through another fence. We are talking about four board fences!! One bull is still loose. He's been hanging out in the woods. He's far enough away from me that I'm not worried. He'd have to travel along fence and roads to get to my place.

After flipping through tons of pics he swear golden eagle. We have hawks that nest not far and falcons or kites (hard for me to tell from the distance but all are within sight of our place in the trees. He said it wasn't a normal one tho :(
Hope its not staying because it seems to know when the dog and I go pick up my girl from her bus :/ arrrg. I don't want to have to lock them up for a half hour mid day lol near impossible they'd think I was crazy and chase would commence. Has to be another way.
Eagles My friend that lives in St. Charles parish sold the few goats he had left, after the eagles killed the others. He though that wild dogs /coyotes might  had been killing them until he witnessed it himself. Sold & gave the rest away to get them out of harms way.

The rapture (raptor) is a Golden Eagle or an immature Bald Eagle. When Bald Eagles are about 3 they can look funky, with white feathers sticking out against the dark.

(I was having so much problem with is IPad kicking me out, no time to see what auto spell check was doing. :lau Comic relief is a good thing!)

I am new to raising Cornish X's and have questions....help lol my chicks are 2 weeks old and have been moved to an enclosure in the barn, which brings me to my first question: do i need warming lights still? the weather is in the 40's for the last few days and i have kept them on also i read something about the lights being a fire hazard is this true? they are currently hung 18 inches above chicks. Second question: i have done some reading on fermented food, i am hoping to feed my chicks this at four weeks old, is this a treat or an everyday thing? also what kind of whole grains should i use? Third question: my layers tail feathers are looking pretty ragged any ideas?

From what i read, fermented feed is a great thing to feed them. On feeding chickens, you have to watch cost. Treats is best to give sparingly, so the chickens wont learn to rely on them and not forage. Starting a compost pile with yard debris and food scraps and a lil dirt is going to make them LOVE YOU!.  One of my favs... is to use an ice pick, stab through a cabbage, put a ziptie thru the hole then use like a rope to attach it in the coop to where they have to leap a lil to peck at it.  Like an edible toy to them and keeps them busy with nutrition.
The ratty looking tail feathers, mine has that right now.  Every so often chickens will molt... could be all over, or usually just in spots.  Watch their feet, ears, waddles and combs... if the colors still stay bright and healthy they are fine.  They start going grey and the chickens start acting funny, lethargic and stumbling, you have a problem.
:)
great info. And reassurance, I have one that blow out her nick, head, and clumps of feathers all over. Her comb looks good. She was acting strange until I examined her and bathed her. A long warn/hot soak, then blow dry perked her up. I was hoping it would help her, all the pin feathers coming in.

Yes, I know about the treats..... I would cut greens from the garden, a treat every day. Now they demand treats. It is hard to stop, I'm working on that. Making them to have to work at it. :gig They do not agree. A few will but the older girls wonder what's up.

i have read about something called Proso, i am considering possibly tilling in some seeds to my chicken pasture, has anyone planted this for their chickens and is there any other recommendations for planting other fodder for chickens

The CX range with the layers, now at 11 weeks they're trying to nest, kicking layers out of boxes and building forts using the other CX to prevent layers from kicking them out! The layers love the crates, I have a few on a shelf here and there. There's a lip on the shelves too but obviously not enough of one to stop fatty here from toppling them over. *more rearranging to do*
