"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hello everyone, my name is Troy, I'm a 40 y/o married father of a little 6 y/o girl. We live in Hammond, LA.

I was thinking of a new way to "entice" my daughter into focusing more on her school work. Luckily, she came up with the idea of some baby chicks (instead of the pony I said "no" to). So, in a few weeks, if she continues to maintain focus in school, we'll be adding some chickens to the family.

We have a 2" x 2" x 4" high cage with shelves and little ladders they can climb around on for when they get bigger than "peep" size, but also have some old rabbit cages I used to use for, well, rabbits.

So, this week, we'll get some food for them, just so she'll have something to look at, then the chicks (which I'm sure we'll get anyway, I have a hard time telling her "no", except for that pony).

There's our intro, wish us luck and we'll keep yall updated with some images as it comes together.

BTW, this website rocks. I've literally been checking it out for hours. When did i become so cool?

:welcome welcome to chicken math. How many do you plan on getting? Just want a reference when you wind up with twice that much. Lol! What breeds do you plan on getting? Break out you cages and get everything ready. Your daughter is going to teach you about chicken math. Lol. Pam

My phone threw a tantrum. Apparently its not a government size data base to hold my 6479 pictures I take of, well, everything. So I must part with some pics. Here's a few I found helpful I'll share before I delete forever...

I posted this on the meat bird thread and just wanted to share with you all.

We processed 10 broilers on yesterday. I was lucky enough to have some surprised unplanned help. It only took us a couple hours but my help got tired. His back and feet were hurting. I was ready to process more but he wanted to take a break and we never got back to doing it again. Oh well, I"m happy with 10.

Here are a few weights that I was able to take. Keep in mind that upon buying the birds, I didn't know that they were the slow growing broilers. Angelicis called and found out more about them when we both noticed that all of our birds were growing extremely SLOW!

Live weight Processed Weight
5.10 lbs --- 4.20 lbs
4.77 lbs --- 3.88 lbs
4.24 lbs --- 3.40 lbs
4.12 lbs --- 3.21 lbs

Other processes weights.
3 lbs 6 ounces
3 lbs 2.5 ounces
3 lbs 2.5 ounces
2 lbs 15.7 ounces
2 lbs 14.2 ounces
2 lbs 12.7 ounces

The livers, hearts and gizzards for all 10 birds weighed 2.56 Pounds. They will be used to make rice dressing.
