"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

ANOTHER CATCH UP:

WORMING: I am not a very rich person, so I had read studies (will find and post when I get a chance) was schooled by an elderly farmer friend, THEN my local Vet told me to use garlic, cayenne, and egg shells twice a week to keep many problems from even beginning in my birds. So I have been doing it for these 3 years and have not had any problem BUT fowl pox last year. Which there is not much you can do to prevent that since it comes from mosquitos... and I do not want to use any types of meds on my chickens ever if I can. I've never seen worms in their feces, since i do these things since hatching, they have never had it TO get rid of!!!

CONGRATS on the building! Looks great, and BTW, your man WILL be borrowed one day, just so you know! LOL

Milking system holders DOES look really cool and helpful... can't imagine having to just sit there and hold 5 of them per baby per feed.... would drive me crazy!!!

PRIM: Thanks for reminding me about what it felt like volunteering with my elderly/sick pals all those years. I have decided to go back to school next year for my CNA so I can work for a local Hospice company... I really feel your stories as well as a few other things being placed in front of me lately is telling me it is what I should do. Your a good friend to have.

LINDA: I am making a pile of a few books for you next time you run by that I have found possibly interesting to ya that I am done reading. Just novellas...

PAM: wont reveal what has transpired between us since it is our own business, I'll let her do that if she so chooses. But she is becoming one of the sweetest most generous people ever! Pam, you know what you did... my appreciation I hope overwhelms you.... THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!! I loved it beyond words!!!!

Oh, and whoever had asked the question... NPIP testing if free. The particular disease affects their ability lay eggs and their fertility so that is what i need to be wary of. Also, I sell chicks and eggs so ANY testing, that my flock has done and im cleared of seems like a great thing to have done. I can sell my chicks, claiming with proof, that they come from NPIP certified parents. I've heard my rates can be raised if I so choose... tho I dont see me doing that. But anyway, that is why I am doing that.

I have never seen any worms ever, EVER in my chickens poo. I have never seen a need to worm them either. I don't like to give meds to my chickens. But I have this one Red Sex link hen that seems a bit light. She is acting completely like normal and still laying eggs regularly. So I thought maybe she might just need a little clean out

I did get some Wazine the other day. But was having second thoughts because I would rather use something more natural. I don't really want to dump water that has that in it into the yard when cleaning out there water containers. So I would have to dump it into a bucket and then what???

A note about using something natural........ when some of my hens had lice last fall. I used the NEEM OIL treatment. UNBELIEVABLE RESULTS!!! I was so pleased at the results. I mixed equal parts of the pure Neem oil with Virgin Sunflower oil. I used a pipette and we treated all the birds at the same time. 4 single drops of the mixture, put onto the skin. One under each wing, one on the neck and one right above the vent.......directly onto the skin, not the feathers. I repeated in 10 days (at which time there were barely any lice that had newly hatched out on a few of the hens). We handle and check the chickens regularly and have since not seen one single louse since then!

So I know that in some cases natural does work. I just don't have any experience with this worming thing. And this isn't like the lice, where you could just have a look at the hen and see if the treatment is working. Who knows, maybe its just her hatchery genetics working against this hen. Her feathers look good and she is not behaving differently. I will think about it and see what comes of whatever I decide to do. Thanks to all for your help!

I am just curious if anyone has any links to info or studies about the natural ways that people do wormings. Like the pumpkin seeds and hot pepper. I have read before, many places that people use this. But I always like to see studies about it. Do ya'll that use it watch their poop for worms or what?.........to know its working?
I watch their poop and have fecal float tests done in April every year with my preventive treatments done in October. All my float tests have come back negative and I have never seen a worm. I choose to treat because many years ago there was roundworm and tape worm found in some of the animals out in the pasture. It turned out that the worms were coming from strays that made their way into the pasture. Everything on the property at that time was treated and now either died of old age or made their way to the freezer. I didn't treat mine at first but as they started getting more roaming space I thought it was the best way I could care for my animals. Recently I have had problems with a neighbors dogs getting into my pasture and that same neighbor leaving the gate open so I will continue this schedule until I know for sure that all risks from others animals have been removed. I haven't seen any studies on natural worming treatments but I have seen people post that it works. I take it with a grain of salt for now.

Well if any of these little feather legged cuties end up being roosters I may have to send it to live at your house! Lol!!!
I would surely take one. My poor Bantam hen, only one left, keeps going broody and hatching all these chicks that are halvsies! Feel sorry for her, getting hunched on by my silly Clyde... he is too big!!!!!

LEMON: the garlic, and cayenne, from what I understand, is supposed to be part of their normal weekly diet. It cant hurt... and I have heard from so many that especially in the Spring and Summer months VITAL for their health and well being. Just buy one of those like mayonnaise size plastic jars of diced garlic and add a spoonful stirred in well then a bunch of cayenne sprinkled on the top when giving FF or oatmeal as a snack kinda thing. Even my dogs have had worms and chickens still didnt...
But thanks for the info on the Lice, I needed to toss that into my chicken raising notebook!!!
