"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I watch their poop and have fecal float tests done in April every year with my preventive treatments done in October. All my float tests have come back negative and I have never seen a worm. I choose to treat because many years ago there was roundworm and tape worm found in some of the animals out in the pasture. It turned out that the worms were coming from strays that made their way into the pasture. Everything on the property at that time was treated and now either died of old age or made their way to the freezer. I didn't treat mine at first but as they started getting more roaming space I thought it was the best way I could care for my animals. Recently I have had problems with a neighbors dogs getting into my pasture and that same neighbor leaving the gate open so I will continue this schedule until I know for sure that all risks from others animals have been removed. I haven't seen any studies on natural worming treatments but I have seen people post that it works. I take it with a grain of salt for now.
So you take the poop to the vet? Or do you do the float test yourself? I know the dumb squirrels poop in our yard and I pick up our dog poo.........because I pick that up I am about 95% sure that I have some kind of VARMIT that visits at night and leaves its poo present every now and then. It just doesn't look like any of the dogs poop. Probably coon or opossum. So I am sure they are being exposed to nasties.

I would surely take one. My poor Bantam hen, only one left, keeps going broody and hatching all these chicks that are halvsies! Feel sorry for her, getting hunched on by my silly Clyde... he is too big!!!!!
Aw, poor girlie!

You'll get there. We have been lucky Ron has some time off. I'm hoping it gets finished before we get swamped at work agin. We haven't had as much rain as you either. I'm only counting the days he's worked on the coop. So it hasn't been quite that fast. Can't wait to see how yours turns out. Pam

Day 9 of our new coop build. Now you can see that it's really like two coops under each window there are chicken doors. It's hard to see the second one some wood is blocking the view. On the sides we have big windows we were given from a lady that remodeled her house. Some of our lumber came from trees on our property that we needed cut. We had them milled in Abita springs . Ron almost gave the windows away I talked him into keeping them. They are in our studio and the last two went in the coop.. We have been lucky to be able to reuse things that would have wound up in the dump. It's a shame some of the things that get thrown away. Pam

I have the vet test. When I had larger livestock the vet would come to me for their care, now that I only have smaller I take it to him. The vet that tests doesn't treat chickens but a fecal float test is the same no matter what you do it in. He only charges $10 for the entire flock. Considering the bottle of wormer that I choose is $80 the test is really cheap and worth it.

ANOTHER CATCH UP:

WORMING:  I am not a very rich person, so I had read studies (will find and post when I get a chance) was schooled by an elderly farmer friend, THEN my local Vet told me to use garlic, cayenne, and egg shells twice a week to keep many problems from even beginning in my birds.  So I have been doing it for these 3 years and have not had any problem BUT fowl pox last year.  Which there is not much you can do to prevent that since it comes from mosquitos... and I do not want to use any types of meds on my chickens ever if I can. I've never seen worms in their feces, since i do these things since hatching, they have never had it TO get rid of!!!

CONGRATS on the building!  Looks great, and BTW, your man WILL be borrowed one day, just so you know!  LOL

Milking system holders DOES look really cool and helpful... can't imagine having to just sit there and hold 5 of them per baby per feed.... would drive me crazy!!!

PRIM: Thanks for reminding me about what it felt like volunteering with my elderly/sick pals all those years. I have decided to go back to school next year for my CNA so I can work for a local Hospice company...  I really feel your stories as well as a few other things being placed in front of me lately is telling me it is what I should do. Your a good friend to have.

LINDA: I am making a pile of a few books for you next time you run by that I have found possibly interesting to ya that I am done reading.  Just novellas...

PAM:  wont reveal what has transpired between us since it is our own business, I'll let her do that if she so chooses.  But she is becoming one of the sweetest most generous people ever!  Pam, you know what you did... my appreciation I hope overwhelms you....   THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!   I loved it beyond words!!!!:hugs

You are right, there are a lot of warm and generous people here. I feel blessed by my chickens and double blessed by the people on here that my chickens lead me to.

I put ACV in my layer feed with water and in their water. I also toss in cayenne from time to time. Garlic would be easy. I've never seen worms either.
