"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thanks, Pam. It did seem to give Primrose the runs. I'll go with the pulverized shells. They all get ACV everyday in their layer pellets. Celie and I have been communicating some back and forth. When I gathered eggs tonight another one was broken on the nest, yuk. Thin shell.

Sounds like a good plan. Tell Celie we all miss her and hope she joins back in soon.Pam

It was great to see you and Amanda is just adorable and so bright! Lovely young lady! I love the bunnies getting played with and snuggled!

It's so sweet of you to continue helping Art <3

How is Celie? Hope she's feeling better. She's in our thoughts, her grand bunnies are doing awesome!

The thin shells indicate cominginto or back into lay or she's not absorbing the calcium or getting it but you offer plenty so I think its an absorption issue. Calcium needs help with vit D to be absorbed properly. Most of the time sunbathing (vitamin D) is enough. Has she been dust bathing or stretched out in the sun much lately? Might be too hot (avoiding Sun because of heat?)
I would scrambled up some whole eggs (protein for feathers), shells and all (i put shell in the microwave for 20 seconds and in a baggy crush them up in my hands like bread crumbs when I'm done, sprinkle over the top and feed them back to the thin layers for a few days. Sounds like you're already doing that :)
I grow an excess amount of mustard greens I pull up and feed the girls regularly and it helps (dark leafy greens are usually high in calcium for veggies) if they won't eat it raw, I've chopped them really fine, cooked them down with lots of garlic too and the girls gobble it up (hubby has walked in saying how amazing it smells he's hungry lol only to get his hand slapped :gig that's for the chickies!)
I have a bunch of greens that went to flower, happy to get you a bunch if you need it! Roots and all (my girls love digging through the root piles lol)

The feathers is probably molting. Winter coats gotta go? The eggs you give her helps speed that along.

The yogurt thing...chickens don't digest dairy well. The do however need good gut cultures especially after an illness or diarrhea and the quickest way to do that is a few tablespoons of cultured yogurts the key is yogurt with the good stuff already in it . I feed fermented feed. That ferment is what their guts need, so I don't feed yogurt anymore BUT I did before FF and it helped.
Thanks for all the hugs and warm wishes. Amanda and I went to Angel's on Sunday. Amanda wanted to hold the baby bunnies and wasn't disappointed. It was great to see you and your red hair!! Everything is looking so good. You guys have been working hard.
Kuntrygirl, I mailed you two more full envelopes. So much fun.
I've been helping clean out my friend's house. It's a lot of work, but I enjoy helping.
Cracked, are you finished with your classes. How is Lucy?
Pam, you were such a big help all the way through. Thanks.
Welcome to new people. This is a warm, funny, CRAZY bunch, but you'll be better for knowing everyone. A really good bunch of strong women. Occasionally a guy will pop on, but in the last year or so they don't stay long. I just don't know why bec we get pretty excited when a guy comes on.
Celie sent me some great CD's of her preacher that I'm enjoying.
I really really need to get into the chicken yard and finish summerizing. Got a winter's worth of deep packed bunny hay out of the bunny hutch and put it around my plants.
Pam, you asked if my blackberries are invasive. I now have an answer: YES!! Lol
Primrose has been looking like she is molting, but I didn't know they molt this time of year. She has been laying thin shelled eggs. I've been giving her plain yogurt at night and cooked eggs with shell. Also, they all get free choice oyster shell but I never see them eat it. Now I am getting thin shells sometimes from a couple others. The Amercaunas have shells so hard it is hard to break them. What else can I do?? Are thin shells more common this time of year??

I also use fermented feed now and then to add probiotics. I haven't fed dairy very often. But I have read that there are some chickens that the traditional way they are "finished" is by feeding them corn and milk for the week or two before they are butchered. I think its the Bresse chickens in France??? Maybe I have the breed wrong. But they are very serious about the way they finish their meat birds.

Hey Prim! Thanks for checking on Lucy. She's hanging in there. I've got the crop bra on her. I don't like it's design, but it will do until I come up with something better. I haven't had time to figure something out yet.
I finished with the "go to class" part, now I have to finish my online testing, then background check and schedule state test. YUCK!!! I am going to try and finish online today, and do background check. You know, in between "regular" work.
My youngest makes his first communion this Saturday. He's very excited. Everyone with "littles" make sure you take the time to enjoy them being "little"...they grow up SO FAST!!! It seems like just yesterday that he was a baby. Now, he's almost finished with second grade.

Kuntry, they gave me my pictures and ovations back! I guess they felt sorry for me. Either that or my spelling was so bad, they called "uncle"! LOL...

I think one of my girls is broody. My blue orpinton (Gertie) is sitting in the nesting box every chance she gets. She's puffed up and fussing. Not hissing, but making the fussing noises my old rooster (you remember Horn Dog Harry...used to make...same breed). She hasn't pecked at me and I can shoo her off the nesting box. She'll then go out and while fussing, eat, scratch around, etc. I'm removing eggs several times a day, so that she doesn't have anything to sit on.
Just let her go until she "snaps" out of it? Getting eggs for her to hatch is not an option. She's eating and drinking. Just ruffled and fussing!! I now know where the term "mad as a wet hen" comes from. At first, I was afraid to turn my back on her, but she's not being mean, just fussing.

That has worked for me in the past. I think some broodies are more stubborn than others.

Does a rooster chick comb grown faster then a hens chick comb I have some chicks that are 1 month old n I just notice some or growing a lot faster then the others one was trying to see if they were rooster r hens

Yes, but it also depends on breeds. If you have more then 1 breed then don't judge it based on the other breeds, it has to be judged on it's other same age breed.
