"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi everyone I live in Jena LA, I have 19 Barred Plymouth Rocks', 15 Red Sex Link's, 5 Black Australorp's, 2 horses, and 2 dogs My desire is to become a Breeder of Heritage breeds. And i work Offshore as a production mechanic 14 & 14

I also use fermented feed now and then to add probiotics. I haven't fed dairy very often. But I have read that there are some chickens that the traditional way they are "finished" is by feeding them corn and milk for the week or two before they are butchered. I think its the Bresse chickens in France??? Maybe I have the breed wrong. But they are very serious about the way they finish their meat birds.

Back in the old days, that's how they finished the roosters getting ready to be processed. Two weeks of cornmeal and milk or buttermilk. Of course back then everybody had a cow.

Welcome!!! Jump right in... We're all a LITTLE off, but in a good way! LOL... How does a production mechanic "get" into chickens? It sounds like you've already figured out the "chicken math" part! LOL...

Welcome topdog, glad to have you. Who watches your flock while you're gone? I've never had Australorps. How are they? Loud?

Quote: Thanks to BYC, i am getting my act together, and even us mechanics need something to keep us busy for the 14 days at home, plus i am getting a long in years and ready to get out of the gulf, chickens might be the answer to supplement my income differential when i do quit the gulf.

And we have one in the running to pass Kuntrygirl! So... you now need peas, turkeys, ducks, throw in a few goats and maybe a cow or two and you'll be set...

Thanks, glad to find the locals, My wife takes care of all the animals, 3 or 4 of the grand kids and works full time and taking online college courses at NW, for business management, in fact she has got to go to NW Thursday for her finals, and i get to come home and see the chicks and her for 14 days, the Australorp's are only about 5 weeks old so i don't really know
