"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

As far as the pecking goes, I found a lotion that you apply to the chick that is being picked on, i used it on all 29 of my 5 wk old chicks, the bick chicks got a taste of it the very first peck, they would rub their beak in the grass and drink water and eat some starter, after that, they would run up to the little ones and hit the brakes just before pecking, they still chase them some, but only one peck all day, the name is Pick No More Lotion( Reduces cannibalism in domestic poultry,) i applied it to their tail, wing tips, neck and back, it definately has a smell to it. it appears to work pretty good, go to www.roosterboosterproducts.com and check it out

I don't have chickens yet. We can't wait though! We are trying to buy or have someone build a coop first. My three year old has already named one Rapunzel and we haven't even bought them yet. I joined here because I want to learn a lot. We have two cats, a dog, and a husband (that counts as a pet, right?). We have two daughters, a 3yo and a 6mo.
my wife never calls me a pet, maybe a child, lol, there's a place on right not far from I 49 on 190 towards Port Barre in opelousas, i think you can go there and talk to the lady and check out the breeds that she has,she would be local, that is the best way to go

Depends on the husban. Lol. Most count! you'll catch on in no time. Any ideas what breeds you want?

Is that Happy Acres Farm? I just added them on facebook yesterday and sent them a message to see if we could visit. I pretty much think about chickens non stop lately. Lol

Happy acres farm is Kuntrygirl on this thread. We call her fertile acres! She has really happy animals.

Can y'all tell me about your coops? Where you got them, who made them, etc?

I think almost all of us built them ourselves. Then rebuilt, expanded, and built a second one... It's not that hard for a standard square coop with a slope roof. If you want fancy you need to have skills, have someone else build it, or buy one. Beware of prebuilt ones in stores as they are not strong, don't fit as many as they say, and do not compute chicken math.

We are not handy at all, so we have to either buy one or pay someone else. I wish we could build it ourselves though! I have seen so many cute plans that I know would end up being too expensive if we paid someone else.
