I'm thinking about doing FF for my birds...I seem to be going thru a lot of feed. Ive read the thread for it but just want to make sure i have this right.. this is what I'm planning to do.. tell me if it is right, please.

Plan on using a 5 gallon bucket, putting enough feed in for about 2 days, covering with water, adding a few "glugs" of ACV and lightly covering it with an old towel. Stir, and let it "do its thing" for a couple days, then strain out enough for the feeding, and add back what I take out

Here's a quick easy site that tells it just right.

Feed and water in a bucket is all you need. The ACV is a jump start for the ferment and not required in this heat we have BUT can't hurt either. I use it!
I also stir it once a day when I feed and only add in dry food twice a week or so (i make large amounts) I add dry enough to keep the ferment fed and happily bubbling

Always save the "juice" in the bottom! That's great Scooby that can be used to make other batches. (i have a friend that always forgets to add dry feed and she comes by and gets a few cups of the "juice" and LOVES using that instead of waiting.
I'll never go back to dry feed lol saved Soooooo much money on meaties because of less waste.

I have pics and stuff too if needed lol my WiFi is weird at the moment and typing one handed (brawled with a rabbit being surrendered and lost

one armed bandit today!)

I gotta tell ya I'm really excited about getting my 20 meaties. I wasn't going to do it yet but with Jennifer bringing them local, I could NOT resist. I better start stocking up on feed.

Angel, I've been around animals all my life but the most torn up I ever was was by a rabbit that did not like being held, but sometimes I had to hold her. She would literally steed my arms and body like I was attacked by a knife. Deep, too. It was bad. That's the rabbits I rehomed to Celie, God bless her.

I am seriously on the verge of needing a deserted island all to myself for a week! My sister is coming to visit and I have a HUGE to do list in the house, including painting. We NEED to get this chicken house finished and painted. Plus all of the outdoor chores/gardening etc. I cannot even list all the sources of stress right now. I hope I don't stroke out :th :th Thank God hub is going to be home this weekend so we can all work on this some more. Right side has the pop out windows installed that we can lower in the winter........as well as half of my refinished old partially rusty FREE arbor I have had for a few years. It seemed like a good time to refinish it right? Because there was nothing else to do.....:lau No, really hubby wanted it too. We are going to build a bit of arbor on each side and then Muscadine are planted at each end and can go towards the center and over top of the arbor. I think it will be cool and will add more shade. Too bad we couldn't use those doors in the foreground. So, he had to build the white ones. But the double old doors will go on the greenhouse. We like that idea too. I can't wait to do the fenced in play yards too! Oh, and for cooling shade.....inside, light movable panels in the rafters. Cool. And center top will pop out with a fan front and back.
It's about time you give us a pic. Looks great! :thumbsup

How many layers?
Try it out.
Start small. Take a smaller container clear glass gallon jar was my first try so I wouldnt ruin a lot of feed if I messed up (can't really mess it up! Really hard to do lol), add 2 cups of dry feed. Add water to the feed til soupy and stir well. Let sit a lil while and stir some more. The feed aborbs the water, add more water to keep it stirable. If you add enough water after it absorbs the 1st water, to cover the mix by a quarter inch or so, the bubbling will be more apparent to see. Let sit 24 hours and stir and by the next day you should see slow bubbles. Try feeding just a lil in the morning and let the girls try it.
I use an oatmeal consistency once I know its bubbling so I don't have to strain it, easy peasy.
Few days you'll kinda see whats going on in the jar and test it out
(i now use big Rubbermaid containers :gig and kassandra or Bee uses a large barrel had it going over a year now in same container with amazing success)

Thanks for the info... I'm thinking about doing it for my layers

I wins we could get her back on!! :bow

I agree! This girl had some crazy stuff going on and was packed pretty tight with 3 other does in a cage that ONE of mine get...so she gets a chance to calm down ;) I won't eat her unless she bites me! :oops:s

Some Love and calmness (we can't discuss the goats humping at a 90 degree angle on an A frame barn roof right above the rabbits :th ) so ill take her licks for now! She was REALLY sweet when I gave her her own cage and treats, even let me pet her! Ug I'll try.... I think does can be like mean girls in high school, she was probably bottom of the totum pole in her previously shared space.
Goes like this all up and down my arm :th I am ok tho ;) but bunnies are no joke when not friendly!
