My daughter's favorite chicken isn't as mobile as the others. She usually just sits in one spot all day and doesn't move unless she needs food or water. She still eats and drinks, should I be worried? All of the other chicks are active and jump around.

This could be a trait of the breed, if you ordered docile breeds, if it has been this way from day one, it is probably nothing to worry about, it may grow out of it, it may not like the attention of the other chicks so it try's to be un interesting to them so they wont bother it.

I have 5 DOMs i got from Petrus, they are very active, however one of my Red Sex Links was the same way, it just stood or sat in one spot and chirped 24 hrs a day, when i checked it after 3 days, i found it had pasty but, so i took care of that and checked its craw, it was hard as a rock, so i would dip its beak in the water several times a day,and she got better, after about 5 weeks you could not tell her from any of the others, she is like a bouncing betty.

Further investigation leads us to believe that there is a problem with Dottie's legs. Googling everything now.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... there was no moiving him because he has ben 'free ranging; himself for a while now.  Slept on the backporch fine.  The run wasnt working because that fox attack I mentioned?  It happened on the opposite side of the yard his run was on, guess they figured out he couldn't get to them.
THEN he ate every single collar we bought for him... literally waged his neck back and forth over a sheet of tin until the last one ripped off!  So smart maybe, yet not so...  He even got out of the choke collar...  

I'm sorry to hear this. You have a dog with high drives not just prey. They are high energy dogs if you don't wear him out with exersize and be consistant he will be distructive. I know you have had family emergencys that take piorty. Sorry for all the losses of chicks. Even if you are able to exersize him you may never be able to leave him around your flock with out him wanting to eat him.

My chicken facts for today......


I am so glad that I happened to get enough of the nest box liners to do some trade outs. I can wash some and let them dry, then trade out later.

I raked out the chicken yard on one side of the chicken barn this evening. I'm still finding broken glass, chain and other odd pieces of garbage in that spot, after living here for many years. Some people apparently do not know how to use garbage bags. One time a couple of years ago I saw something in that area when raking.......I ended up pulling out a pair of underwear

. Same time a long piece of light weight chain. I was kind of scared to see what would come up at the end of that one. Thank goodness it was JUST chain.

I finally got an egg from a hen I have been working hard to get back to better health. She had lost so much weight before we did everyones worming. After the second worming and some doses of vitamins she started gaining weight back and I was surprised today with the beautiful big egg.

She still has more weight to gain back and I have plans for things added to their diet for boosting their protein and sometimes the vitamins are added. I could add the vitamins to their water, but I feel like too much gets wasted. Mixing it into food is more efficient.

When shallow frying fresh chicken livers they will pop hot grease on you like they mean it! Tasty none the less. Yum!

Depends on how much you want to spend & how big of a one you want, but I highly recommend my Brinsea Octagon Eco w/auto-turner -- it is spot on with temps and humidity. I've had very good luck with it!

x 2. I don't have a brinsea, just a hovabator with a fan, but the brinsea is on my wish list.

So I figured out what happened to my pullet. I've been brainstorming what I did differently in the past few weeks to cause a heat related death. I've been raising poultry for almost five years, and this has never happened. But I figured out what I did wrong! Last week I bought new waterers for the birds. The nice 3.5 gallon hanging ones from Tractor Supply. Before, I was sawing off the bottoms of 20 gallon cow protein tubs, since we go through a lot of them, and using those as waterers. I didn't like them though because the birds will stand in them to drink and therefore dirty the water, so I would have to dump and clean them frequently. Well DUH! They were also standing in them to cool off! Birds lose heat through their feet and heads. I had spoiled my birds, and by removing the old waterers without warning, just as it was getting even hotter, I set them up for failure since they weren't acclimating correctly. So I set out the old waterers again for them to use as a means to cool off, and kept the new waterers so they would always have fresh, clean water. As soon as I set down the tubs they all ran to them and stood there.
