"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have a thing with a few inches of water a brick and I dump ice in it. They take turns standing in it. It extra work and I had wondered recently if it was helping. I didn't know the cool feet helped that much :) ill keep it going too now thanks.

So I figured out what happened to my pullet. I've been brainstorming what I did differently in the past few weeks to cause a heat related death. I've been raising poultry for almost five years, and this has never happened. But I figured out what I did wrong! Last week I bought new waterers for the birds. The nice 3.5 gallon hanging ones from Tractor Supply. Before, I was sawing off the bottoms of 20 gallon cow protein tubs, since we go through a lot of them, and using those as waterers. I didn't like them though because the birds will stand in them to drink and therefore dirty the water, so I would have to dump and clean them frequently. Well DUH! They were also standing in them to cool off! Birds lose heat through their feet and heads. I had spoiled my birds, and by removing the old waterers without warning, just as it was getting even hotter, I set them up for failure since they weren't acclimating correctly. So I set out the old waterers again for them to use as a means to cool off, and kept the new waterers so they would always have fresh, clean water. As soon as I set down the tubs they all ran to them and stood there.

I always thought, 'man my birds are so messy. Do they really have to stand in the waterer to drink?' But after watching them I see they don't do it all the time. They'll walk up hot and panting, stand in the water for a little while, then walk off considerably cooler. I would definitely continue the ice, since that is a much bigger help than just water and it would be a big adjustment for them.

I put out a plastic bin and change out shallow water. But I have never seen them actually stand in it, but they still take turns standing in the bird bath that I fill fresh everyday.

I now have THREE broody silkies! It started off as one, and they have slowly been piling into the nest, dividing up eggs. I only have one silkie hen not brooding right now. I guess I can't complain, though. Broodiness was one of the main reasons I wanted silkies, and at least I won't have to incubate and brood the chicks myself..

Happy Fourth, y'all! We had a small BBQ all day. It was great. During that time, I also started picking corn from my garden. It is so perfect! I can't believe I grew this from a seed!

My daughter loves corn so much that she was eating it right out of the garden, uncooked and everything. She carried it around with her into the pool and on the slip n slide. Son funny.

My make shift chicken foot cooler.

I've started a space with herbs, cuttings I rooted from my herb garden. Lemon balm (TY Lemon!), choc. Mint, thyme, oregano & Mexican Tarragon going in another corner today) - chicken safe, these herbs have crazy roots and can be pretty much stomped and picked to smithereens and still bounce back, so lacking available screens I used metal scrapped shelves to block the young plants for awhile while they establish roots.
I am working my way up to Prims screen idea!
