"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Morning La-yers. Well, I killed the first snake in 4 years on our place last night. Proof positive to me that the guineas were, indeed, keeping the snake population under control (my aunt across the road said her grandson killed 2 in the back yard yesterday).
My young keets can't grow up fast enough! I wish I could put them on guinea steroids or super vitamins or something. It'll be next year before they'll be grown enough - and hopefully, trained enough - to do snake patrol.

Jim spotted the snake up in the crepe myrtles after a bird's nest - heard the commotion - by the time I got out there w/the big flashlight we lost sight of it.

Then a little while later, he went back outside and it was climbing up the side of our storage shed - this was right at dark - he stuck his head in the door & called me to bring the gun. I grabbed the shotgun & ran out & he said, "Don't shoot! You'll blow holes in the storage shed"! "Go get my pistol"!

I said, "And you don't think you'll make holes with bullets"?

He said, "Keep your eyes on it & don't let it get away'! & hustled back inside to get his pistol.

Believe it or not, the snake was motionless all this time, halfway up the side of the shed. I looked at it & said, "Sit! Stay"! & put my shotgun to the side & picked up a shovel & poked sharply at it & knocked it to the ground & chopped its' head off.
Jim came back out w/his pistol & looked at me, the dead snake, the storage shed. I said, "I didn't make a hole in it. I didn't even make a dent in it. You're welcome". & scooped up the dead snake & disposed of it in the field. Problem resolved!

I can take cuttings. Been thinking of taking a ton of cuttings and trying to make them root have to do a bit of research bit have 3 large trees to try with :) when I do I can send you some

I rooted a few about 8-9 years ago off my neighbors tree. I cut limb about foot long scraped lil bark off at bottom then dipped it in rooting hormone I bought at walmart. The two I have left are 4' tall bushed out n loaded with smaller figs this yr. Would have more but my wife mowed a few over lol

Another successfully busy weekend! I was trying to upload photos from my camera while typing this. It exhausts its battery very quickly, even while off (I really need a new one) but alas! It came back on and I quickly uploaded everything. I included some pictures off of my phone just for fun.

We picked up twenty black and blue copper marans last week. It was a long car ride, and as you can see they were pooped by the time we got them all settled in! Half are going to a friend, and half will stay with us. They were born that day, so they were very cuddly and snuggly.

Sunday though was the REAL fun, though. We got peachicks! They are two pied india blues, and one india blue. I've never had peafowl, and was surprised at both how calm they are, and how quiet and different the noises they make are. I better enjoy it while I can. Lol! I've read that they will be very noisy full grown. The cage they are in was something we built for multiple purposes. It can be used as a dog kennel, goat carrier, rabbit pen, chicken coop, pig porter, etc. Besides being the peachick brooder it was also used for...

..the new pony! I have higher quality photos further below. He is the absolute cutest thing. He's 5 months old, and will be our teaser stud/pony ride/donkey breeder. He has the poofiest hair I've ever seen.
love.gif
I've never raised ponies, only standard sized horses, so the awww reflex is alive and well.

We ALSO finally have some chicks hatching that aren't dying. The silkies kept squishing their chicks, so I ended up tossing all the eggs and breaking their broodiness. They have to be without nest boxes, because as soon as one is put in with them they will start sitting on nothing. So far the hen below has hatched 8, but she has 4 or 5 more eggs that haven't hatched. She's free ranging, so I plan on penning her up once all of her babies have hatched out. She's hatched white, black, black and white, chipmunk, and white chipmunk chicks.

Here are some better pictures (plus some from around the farm):

She is a very protective broody. A wasp flew by the nest and she puffed up and growled at it.

I went to let the pekin out and all the hens had dirty backs.
yesss.gif
The pekin are 5 months old, and should lay any day now. I'm glad to know my boy's instincts have kicked in. As soon as they start laying I'll start incubating. Maybe I'll get a few mixed with crested blue swedish.

Our buck is currently shedding out, and it's such a big difference! A week ago it looked like he was two rabbits stuck together. One end was small, and the other was big and fluffy.

A young white bantam cochin rooster

I'm not sure how we got this color, but I plan on making a breeding pen for them once they mature. They may be from my copper marans mix and a mixed rooster we had with her for a while. This is a pullet, and I have a younger rooster and an older pullet to go with her. They'll make a nice trio. I like the lightness of her legs a lot, plus she and the cockerel are muffed. I haven't checked the other pullet yet for muffs, but if she has them I'll be excited!

This is Sunflower, who is obviously a very spoiled pullet.
roll.png
She's five months old, along with a barred and a black pullet, so they should all be laying soon. The barred looks the closest to POL, judging by her comb and wattle reddening.

I'm very proud of these pictures, because it is ridiculously hard to get a clear photo of a black silkie inside a coop.
lol.png
These are two out of about 30 photos, and these were the only ones that came out.

These two are from the first batch of chicks I ever raised. I love everything about them and have been trying to hatch chicks off of them for a while, but until recently my breeds ran together and once I could finally start hatching pure, the hen stopped laying. I believe they are both molting, because I've seen white/red feathers laying around the pen. I wish she would start laying again, because I would love to have a dozen just like them.

Whew. I hope you guys enjoy my antics.

Thanks Ron I don't have a lot of experience with predators. Your right on target there lol. I read Rascal as a kid that's about all the experience I've had. I do have a have a heart (live trap) for my TNR cats will that work? We put tuna with no results yet. I wouldn't let my GSD out to deal with coon she's big and has three smaller sets of eyes with her lol!, glad.the rescues are all good, best wishes to everyone here. Welcome to all the new folks and bad news about Jenifer's dog :( I'm not much for writing in BYC but I do try to keep up. Were reusing pallets building hen house. Oh & we have 5 cats (+10 rescue That's another math that doesn't quite add up ;) ) 2 rescued dogs 1 GSD and a small pit mix. We vaccinate chckes are using some FF (thanks Kuntrygirl) which keets & goose turn their noses up at lol. Thinking of breeding either BLRW or French blue copper marans. Yea! Terri, snake killer! I might think about guineas too. This has been the year of snakes at our house! Maybe they'll blend in and Ron won't notice. Lol!

Beautiful animals! congrats on all the new additions. You'll love having peacocks - I miss mine, altho it was the right decision to make as I had to cut back.

Today I learned that the chickens can't reach inside the holes of the feeder very well. When I opened it up, they started eating so fast you would think they hadn't eaten in days!

Also, they all jumped on my back. My daughter thought it was the funniest thing ever. Then Rainbow got on my shoulder. I was like "OMG HOW COOL! Let me get a picture of this!" I started snapping like crazy. The top pic is her on my shoulder. The bottom pic is immediately after she pecked the contact lens RIGHT OUT OF MY EYE. Luckily, it landed right on my hand. It was more of a comical experience. At first I thought I had gone blind (my eyesight is HORRIBLE) until I remembered I was wearing contacts. Then I noticed it on my hand. Crazy!
