"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

X2. I can go outside in the chicken yard all day in good weather. There's always something to do or just sit on my bench, sip lemonade and read. The next thing you will need is a comfortable area for YOU so you can just sit and relax with them. Most of my friends don't like to just sit on the chicken yard, but I have one friend that will. She calls it a regular habitat.

We have a table set up next to the pin and my daughter and I are actually eating supper out here right now!

My daughters and I are eating outside with the chickens (by her request) while my poor husband is stuck on the sofa. Lol.

You can always tell how humid it is by looking at this one. Her hair is in a ponytail, but all of the curls are still trying to burst free!

Sooo jealous :gig been dying for a hammock!
That's such a cute setup! I have a hammock with a stand set right in front of my chicken yard. The hammock has a canopy over it so I can be shaded and watch all the drama and the politics. :pop

X2. All summer I planned on a hammock. Finally I found a very good one at Kohl's, 60% off, plus I had an extra 30% off coupon and $20 Kohl's cash. I was going to get it cheap. But unfortunately I hesitated. I went the next morning to get it and it was sold!! And they didn't have any more.

Great news, Primrose was peacefully on the top perch tonight. All looked content. Yea!! I hope that lasts. From hiding her head in the nesting box to top perch in just a few days.
Melnic: yes, pecking order can effect everything, use of nesting box, perch, eating, drinking. Get a second nesting box. I have 4 options for 5 chickens just in case. I'm always on the lookout to make sure everyone is eating.
Here's Prim being a big girl regular chicken.

Question, Does pecking order come into play when they are laying eggs? Or more specifically access to the nest boxes? It seems like I have a hen that guards the best boxes until she decides she wants to get into them and lay but in the meanwhile I have others who are pacing like they "need" to but the "guard" chases them off. Is this typical?
all chickens have personality, some more then others, and there are some that have attitude, some are all attitude. Is she the #1 hen/pullet? It very well could be the case. My Mary, a Buff Orpinton, would not let other chicken com near me. When she was broody and had chicks some hens she let around the chicks others she chased away. I had one hen that would only lay in 1 box, would push other chicken eggs out before she would lay. :th It took me weeks to figure out what was going on. I would find all these eggs out in the coop on the ground, 1 egg in the box, sometimes no egg in the box, she just kept that box clean for herself. I know most of the girls eggs. The RIR, PPBR, and the mixed girl all laid eggs that looked to closely a like in size and color, never know which were who's.

Actually I have four nest boxes but she charges any of the girls who try to come near it. Once she gets into one and does her egg thing she's fine about letting the other girls around. It just takes her 1-1.5 hrs to finally jump up to lay the egg. Meanwhile the others are like " I gotta go!" :th
