Chickens or ducks? LOL!

Y'all are giving me such bad egg fever. I've been looking up incubators and reading about homesteading. Maybe a silky just for broodiness? I tried to talk to Husband about meat goats yesterday, and he got the "thousand-yard-stare."

So, maybe next year.

Start with a few meat birds then slowly work up to goats. Then he won't glaze over. once he taste fresh chicken you've raised he'll be open to it. Pam

My Delaware hen that was sitting with out any eggs about a month or so ago well, She stopped the broodiness all on her own a few weeks ago. Though now I have 3 others that are broody and are actually doing what they are supposed to do(i.e. sitting on eggs) and have hatched out 3 that I have seen so far today. Needless to say I am a very proud chicken mom. They still have loads of eggs between them to go. We have started taking eggs from them when our egg count went down to 3 eggs a day, sometimes more then three but no where the numbers that we should be getting.

I'm getting 6 or 7 a day with 14 more pullets coming along within the next couple of months. What am I gonna do. I put the 6 Golden Comets and 4 White plymouth rocks on Shreveport CL for $15 ea or buy 4 and get 1 free. The little Blue egg layers I'm trying to get $8 and $5 for the smaller ones and the roosters. Hope to he// I can get rid of some of these. I've got Swedish Flower Hens in the 'bator and SG Dorkings come in 10 days.

Get ready to be grossed out! I'll show the pretty pics first!

The first pic is my Legbar poulet that should be laying. I'm looking and waiting any day now.
Number 2 is my Bielefelders rooster. He's so pretty but camera shy. That's the phenix hen with him.
The next is him with a biefeleders hen I'm waiting for them to lay also.
Now for the gross part remember I've been fighting one hen with brumble foot. I've drained it several times never getting the plug out. We've done that about 4 times. The last time about a month ago I finally got a small plug out but didn't feel all the infection was out. I had touchered her enough for one day.so we bandaged it up and hoped it would heal because we finally got a plug out. Well yesterday I noticed her limping and told Ron we needed to take care of it one more time this has been off and on for I think 6 months now. So we got everything ready for surgery. On a side note if you attempt to do this on your own know this is staff infection you need gloves and to disinfect everything before and after. Dispose of everything carefully . So started cleaning her foot. Poor thing it's so swollen . I wished I had videoed it. I had a 5mm biopsy punch tried to punch over her scab on the bottom of her foot. It wouldn't punch through. So I examined good and found the side of the scab wAs raised so I grabbed it and this hudge plug came out the same place as the last time. But this was four times bigger.

After that came out I squeezed and it erupted a puss volcano . I couldn't believe how much came out. So bandaged again praying I got all of it and it will heal. If you haven't sanded your roost do it you really don't want to deal with this. Pam

Thanks for the pics and information! Sure hope I don't have to deal with this, but better informed if I do. How do you help the hen deal with the pain when you are performing this procedure?

You don't, poor baby they need to be held well but other than that the don't react much.I wrap them in a towel its easier to hold and control them. Its self preservation they stay pretty still and quiet. In the wild if they showed injury or made noise they attract preditors.
I now do a foot check once a week when I check for other things. Your heavier hens are prone to it but can happen to any one who gets even a micro cut on their foot.If you don't have a chicken first aid kit I would make one so when things happen you have what you need. Pam

Oh my gosh, been busy :/

I think hubby, the kids and I are going to visit Celie tomorrow! They can see a real farm! :cd

Primrose gave this beautiful dress to my daughter. Lol I had to go to work and when I came home my girl was sleeping...with the dress she's my lil Angel

50 peeps arrived a day early yesterday. I picked up a spare coop from Primrose the day before and what awesome timing! Thanks again Prim, the ISO pop worked great as a temp holding pen while we finished up their coop.

We have 50 peeps arriving every 2 weeks thru Halloween lol

Been battling mosquitos and flies. We are winning but Daaaang its a full time job doing it naturally.

Bunnies are breeding, we have a few new additions too. Added a pedigreed silver marten doe and a broken new Zealand doe along with two NZW bucks...I see colorful babies in our future!

Digging up the gardens and planting for fall/winter has been fun for the chickens building cages and adding a cement floor to a coop with drainage has been keeping us busy. Just when I thought I see rest in sight..Fall arrives bringing fall clean ups

I have to brag on my other love my dogs. Today a silver Wyandotte went under the fence where my German Shepard's rule. The chickens and the dogs have separate yards. My dogs are just about out of puppy stages. Sadie started chasing her we told her to stop. She did then Ron told her to bring and she herded her over to the gate of the chicken yard. Waited till we opened the gate. I'm so happy how their training is coming along. Six months ago that chicken would've been killed.
