I didn't know we had mink here. I've never seen one.I put my trap out whenever I have predators. I've always caught opossums After an attack with just the head ripped off. Now I want to see a mink. i've only seen the coats. Pam
Yep, we have plenty of mink, especially around wet areas such as creek bottoms, sloughs, ponds and lakes and they will travel a long distance to wipe out your flock, my grand parents who lived 1/2 mile from the nearest creek had a mink get in their hen house and wiped out 30 out of over a 100 chickens in one go, the younger ones love to kill just for practice, it was devestating to open the door at daylight and find chickens of every size and disscription laying dead and only a few having their heads eaten, but i have seen them kill and eat the heads of 1 or 2, and leave the rest alone, grand pa would find the spot where it chewed its way in and set a trap on the inside, the next night we would catch a mink, they can go through a knot hole in a board.

Wow! You learn something new everyday. I've not seen or trapped any on the northshore. I have a bayou running threw my land too. Pam

Good evening everyone.

So I've been busy toady. Had the stump removal guy out today to make way for the bird house. After he left I built a earth pad for the coop and then set up batter boards with a string line. Everything is square and ready to start setting posts tomorrow. I decided to go with a 13'x24' coop. The size in Harvey Ussery book. Thanks again LaDoodler. :) Haven't decided on the roof yet will either be a gable or shed style. I'll have to sleep on it.
I've got plenty of framing material, all rough cut 2x pine in 16' lengths from trees I had milled. Will allow money to be spent elsewhere :)

Campingshaws sorry to hear about the pred attack. It just reinforces why I need to be using hardware cloth on everything.

Omg. I found a dead peep yesterday. One, first one in a looong time. It was on its back, guts set next to it. I thought it died and the others ate at it, ew I know but saw no breech on wire run, netted from top and these 50 peeps are 3 ft off the ground in a brooder inside the protected run!

Today I go out and 5 are dead, upsidedown and partially eaten only now all survivors are scared to death. They've been secured but what's eating them and not taking whole peep? Leaving it there after a few bites :(
