"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey Cody, totally understand on the coop. Just keep one side totally open to the elements and windows that can be opened on the others. Heat kills a lot more easily than cold. Deep litter is the best ever. I love it and so do my girls. I do Fermented feed to keep the smell down and save money. If you don't want to kill them then just get pullets and have eggs. Easy peasy.

LindaB thanks for the tip on the fermented feed. It's the kind of info I need. I can see how that would be extra beneficial for the chicks. I think I'll be able to do the deed. At least I'll know that they've had a good life and will have been well taken care of. :) I'm looking forward to trying homegrown yardbird.

Here's a quick site that will answer all your questions about it.

Hey Pam thanks for pointing me to your photos. That's a very nice coop I could live in there :) I really like the siding where did it come from. It looks like real bark.

It's Real we ordered it from N.C. to build a pottery studio. We had enough left over for the coop. Ron built the door too.You could build it with out the bark. Pam

Nothing like fresh eggs the ones in thr store are a month old before hitting the shelves.

Thanks, Pam. I started this hobby with realistic expectations of loss, but kids don't always understand.

She was pretty small for her age, 6 weeks. There were feathers on the hole in the wire, and a wing left on the porch. I don't think a cat could have pulled it through like that. The last one (nearly grown) was mostly intact but her head was gone. I was thinking raccoon for that one, and I'm still thinking it. Either way, I have some work ahead of me. I'm selling off about half my flock with plans to get new birds Friday, so I'll be using my quarantine coop for them.
It sounds like maybe a Mink on the last one

I didn't know we had mink here. I've never seen one.I put my trap out whenever I have predators. I've always caught opossums After an attack with just the head ripped off. Now I want to see a mink. i've only seen the coats. Pam

Last year around this time I saw several otters in the road, but honestly I've never seen anything outside of raccoons and armadillos on our land. We had hogs on the game camera one year, but I know they're not inside my fence. (They're part of the reason we got the fence.) I need to set up the camera in the yard and get a live trap to set up on a night we keep the cat in.

Is anyone else gardening? I wanted to start some peas and beans but was afraid it was too late. I wanted to sprout some boss for the girls, so if my peas and beans wouldn't have time to produce, at least the girls could eat them back down. I've never successfully gardened, but there's always time to try?

Soaking some BOSS and wheat right now. Tomorrow I will put in a burlap sack and lay flat. Water daily for 4 days. Fab sprouts. The girls love them. They are considered greenery up to 4 day. After that it is considered protein fodder. Both are great but the chickens love the sprouts best.

I think I'm going to buy some 2 gallon buckets and sprout more at a time.

Almost everyone on here gardens. If you've been unsuccessfull you need to amend your soil. you can bring a sample to the ag center near you they will test it and let you know if you need to amend your soil. Pam

Thanks Pam, I'll see if I can do that. I haven't tried gardening yet here (been here four years) but I've tried off and on other places. Here we just have river sand, so I'm sure it's lacking. In MS I had lovely houseplants but only one survived the move to SWLA. But I picked up a few "end of season" clearance plants that are doing really well, and that bolstered my confidence to try other new things. :D
