"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Yes, I need info on bathing chickens.  My white plymouth rocks came to me dirty.  And now they look even worse.  I need to set up a good sand box for them.  What do you put in it.  Just sand or partial sand and peat?     :pop    Anyone?

If you google it there is really good info and tips on show bird websites and wikihow. We are doing some tomorrow since my girl wants to enter some of the chickens we got this spring into the fair. NOT show quality birds. But good practice for next year.

She absolutely can join. If there is no homeschool group around she can join and be a member "at large". If you go on the 4-H website you can find info for your parish as well as membership forms you can fill out. There will be a 4-H coordinator for you area that can help with details. If it's rapides parish the office is at LSU Alexandria.

I'm looking to rehome a pair of phenoix show birds. Ron got them at a swap. He didn't know they were show birds.I will donate for 4-H. He is a sweet rooster. I love their personallity but I'm consentrating on my Crested cream legbars and bielefelders for breeding. The rest are egg layers. I've got a good little egg business going now. Pam

Ok. So we went yesterday to pick up the speckled sussex and they are GORGEOUS. The roo was strutting in the driveway when we pulled up and he took my breath away! STUNNING!

I think I've found my breed.

I don't know anyone who is looking right now and my girls have already started on their chosen breed. Maybe try looking on facebook on a 4-H page or a Louisiana chicken swap page. I'm sure they would go quick, but I think you should sell them for at least a little bit. It helps to deter the crazy people that are out to just get something free and resell it for a high price. Hope you find them a nice home.

Any Chicks?
They are about 6 mo old and the 4 pullets are turning red on the combs. Yea. The cockerel is still acting like a kid. They are going to be huge. Blosl and XW brands that I'm going to mix and make my own. That's what Fred said to do. Regal, stunning and I'm going to raise a bunch to sell locally to get the good breeds down in La. I had to pay $30 each (discounted) to get these at 5 mo. I'm not going to do this to others. $15. When I sold my layers the other day both the people who came wanted to buy them. I'll have a market.

Thanks! We are St. Landry. I'll check it out. We still have a few more years until she can join. It was just funny that you had mentioned it because I was wondering about it the other day.

I so agree with this. Unless you are giving them to someone you know (or at least know their reputation with animals), I would definitely list them for sale. That way, only someone who is serious about them may reply. I have often listed a bird for sale and ended up selling at a reduced price at pickup because it was evident during our correspondence that the person would care for them properly. I even list my extra cockerels for sale on the FB groups or Craigslist. This is the only place I have ever offered any bird for free.

I know it sounds like $30 is a high price for a 5 month old pullet, but have you charted and calculated the cost to raise them to that age? You really might be surprised. I feed all organic so my feed bill is inflated, but just in feed I average $5 per bird per month. That doesn't include any costs such as building materials for housing & repairs to existing structures and watering systems, and anything else you buy such as bedding, ACV, wormers, etc. I don't even take into consideration the time I've invested because I enjoy it so much. I definitely don't make a profit and wouldn't make it as a business, but I try to recoup at least some of the feed cost.

May I ask what breed you have from Mr. Blosl??

How do you remain patient during moulting?

We have 48 layers, and I'm getting 2-8 eggs a day. We had been doing really well selling eggs, now I feel like I'm letting everyone down. Since Sunday I've collected just over a dozen.
