"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Wow! This is a very active group of chickens lovers! Thanks for the welcomes.
I guess I'm figuring out the chicken math too. In addition to the 4 originals I have (black copper marans mix) and the new campine and Araucana chicks I got last week (6 total), mr Roy at cypress duck farms (aka cypressdrake) put some blue copper marans and lemon cuckoo orphingtons in the incubated for me last week. :)
Oooooo, both good choices. Let us know how it turns out. Love those blues.

Everybody's getting all these nice eggs :) Can't wait till my little birds are old enough to lay.

My new EZPlucker arrived today from "CC Only" along with three killing cones. Was very glad nothing was damaged during shipping or would have had to have gone back. The plucker looks nice and is made of quality materials even though it is made in China. The 1 hp motor has a cast iron housing. The pulleys are also heavy cast iron. Looks like I will get to try it out soon(hopefully). My sister has a few cocks that need culling. The cones are pretty nice, they are stainless steel with spot welds to hold the cone shape together. The top and bottom edges are bent over so no sharp edges. The quality on these are better than I expected. I'm glad I caught the Thanksgiving sale or the plucker and cones combined would have been around 250.00 dollars more. If anyone is in the market for cones I would suggest these if you were to buy rather than make them. Although I think they are a bit steep at full price.

I've gone and jumped off the deep end. Today I ordered a Dickeys 2x2 incubator. :) I'm gonna need something to hatch soon.

OH YEAH BABY, My Cream Legbar finally started laying again after a long period of egg drought, it is the 1 in the middle, they used to be green like the other 2, they are going in the bator too.

Morning all. Good weather here. I let my kids decorate the tree last night, but it fell over this morning. I was torn between leaving it or spacing some ornaments around, so guess I got my answer!

My poor rooster is dancing his little feet off today. I heard him singing under the window and looked out in time to catch him dance for my little barnyard pullet. I was pretty excited, because that means he sees her as mature now? And then a sussex hen wandered over and he danced for her too. I guess he's dancing for anything with a red comb, today, and they're all just giving him the cold shoulder. :lau

Lost one of the campine chicks overnight. All looked good last night but she'd been gone a while when I went in this morning. I'm keeping them in my shed with a heater on at night then outside durning the day. Should I be concerned about the others?

Sometimes a chick just dies. But you should check things over in the brooder. Temperature, availability of clean good and clean water. I like to sit and watch and make sure everyone is eating, drinking, calm, not cheeping loudly like they are uncomfortable and if everyone is pooping good with no pasty butt.

I have been coming on here for a year. Even before I got chickens. Seven months before. I feel like I have learned an immense amount of info. BUT, if I ever say anything to offend anyone or make you think I'm getting above myself, you have my permission is say two words. Rooster Cull.
That says it all. Never have I made such a production of anything. Thank you Jesus, I was alone on the property.

This was the single rooster in the Cobb 500 breeders rescue. He was about 15 months old and about 15 lbs. Big heavy bones. I was going to try something new and use the broomstick method. Now, I'm 67 and me and him did not agree at all. I had him bound and covered in a towel and when I tried to pull up. Nada. He struggles and I went flying backwards.

Pitiful. I managed to get back up and retrieve him. And I had no other way planned except to do it like the lady on youtube. Wrapped in a towel in my lap. I cut onle side of the throat and he was bleeding fine so I didn't bother with the other. After 3 minutes, I thought, wow, this was easy, he didn't even struggle. Then he raised his head and looked around. Not laughing anymore. I had to do the other side and hold him while he thrashed around mightily. Finally it was done and I began to peel him. I was only going to do the breasts and thighs and legs but he was so big I couldn't cut through the bones. I managed to fillet the legs and one thigh and the other came out whole. I have about 6-7 lbs of meat but I think I'll be keeping the hens forever. And ever. Amen.

You would be right if you think I'm not ever telling my family.
