"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey, y'all. I just thought I'd drop in and show y'all that o crocheted my flock.

Kimmy those chicks are pretty cool. Nice job :)

How's the sussex hunt going, Chica? I've seen you around in various other threads. I'm really interested in breeding up good lines, but I just don't think I'll have the time or resources this year. Maybe I'll try to find hens/pullets, to bring in new blood, and call it good. Maybe I'll just focus on bringing up a garden and letting the chickens stay the same for a year.

Idk. I asked on SS board without much luck. Thinking I'll probably order from a hatchery. Don't need to show, just decent yard birds :)
How is the hatching? must be exciting!

I saw that Ideal in Texas has the SS, and they promise good quality. I haven't dealt with them, but they were highly praised on a Facebook group I'm a member of. I've been reading the standard and I think only two of my hens would be good for breeding. I need someone who knows better to look at them for me. I think my roo is pretty good, too; he's got some white in his wings but it's just a few feathers, not bad. His speckles are nice and even. I might try to find some in the spring, for new blood.

Haha, only 17 more days to go! :lau

when dealing with humidity in an incubator you wanna focus on surface area of your water dish...see its not the number of sponges you place in there it you adding more volume in surface area....say you have a three inch small dish with 30 percent...you can increase the dish size and still use a sponge to 5 inch dish and your humidity should raise....my four inch dish with sponge has been dry for two days now and its still holding 50 percent.... here is a pic of the homemade incubator
you can see the low humidity when I added the small dish and its current humidity 26-48 rh

top view of the homemade incubator fitting 30 eggs

midway before humidity stabilized

when I first plugged it in says 70 degrees

temp stabilized first and the humidity lowered right off the bat

outside view

most people say run it for a couple days to make sure it stabilizes and I say if you put that much effort into building something that is digitalized and it doesn't work...then you shouldn't build it in the first place....works like a charm tho....hatch date is the 13th of this month....they also make a digital temp and digital meter in one unit now....im building large scale incubators later this month when I get my fridges and freezers...I will be using junk broken units so I don't have to build a insulated box...hope this helps....check out the step by step below in blue I go into detail on how to make it and what you need with plenty of pics on how to build and wire the unit

Nice build. I use the same type of thermostat in my homemade incubators. How are you turning/tilting your eggs?

My New Years resolution is no new resolutions and to give my wife more credit than she asks for dealing with these chickens, she is wonderful and is becoming more involved, she baby sitted the bator for 2 weeks while i was offshore, 3 of her 6 WL eggs hatched, so now she is a breeder as well

There we go. Pretty chill, easy going chick. I really am hoping it is a big fat hen! I'm loving the blue.

There is a Facebook group called Marans fanciers and if you post the pictures there they could tell you. Bev Davis pays on there quite a bit as well as other well known Marans breeders. They are very knowledgeable too. :)

How fun, building your own. I had just a very small scoop in one corner and had cut a sponge in half and crammed one end in. So that really wasn't sufficient. I was just short on space in there because of how I set them up to hatch. I will reconsider the layout for next time. I hope you more when you're hatch and you build anymore incubators.

So I walked into the guest room where we keep the incubator just to check on everything, and it was unplugged! I'm not sure for how long, I think the dog was walking through and tripped on the cord as she was walking by. It's the only thing I can think of that happened. I checked on them the previous afternoon and all was well and then the following morning when I found the problem. Think they will be okay? I'm not really wanting to candle them at this point, because I'm pretty sure I won't be able to tell if anything is going on or not...and in supposed to put them in lock down on Tuesday. What do you all think?
