Well it's not spring and I'm no chicken so I need to go to bed. I'm only up because I decided to bake a cake last minute. Dang dog just looked at me like I was dumb when I told her to go to the store and get me one. Lazy mutt. I had to make one myself.

Well, one of my chicks has a wonky leg. At first I thought it had curled toes, but after struggling for 20 minutes to make a shoe I sat it down and lifted it with my finger underneath the keel. One leg planted firmly, and the other hovered in the air. I've seen pictures of the chick "wheelchairs" but wanted to get opinions first? It's still walking on its knees, like they all were yesterday. The rest are on their feet and have been since last night. I gave it overnight, hoping that since it was one of the last to hatch that it would strengthen up, but now I think I need to intervene.

I left them upright. It didn't seem to hurt anything. I did notice that whenever someone was "almost out" then whoever was already hatched rushed over to crowd them. Had they been on their sides, the pipping eggs would have rolled all over. BUT the crowd support could have possibly assisted a side hatched, instead of occasionally hindering an upright one.

I missed the first one, but I watched all the others. Very fascinating. After the initial pip yesterday (that lasted FOREVER), the first chick was probably only minutes old when I found it at 6:45 this morning. The other five had hatched by 11 or so. That sounds slow, but it was like popcorn.

I had put paper towels and a washcloth on the wire mesh, but they kept climbing back into the cartons. That's the biggest reason I moved them; they seemed to be having trouble maneuvering the wire and cartons, and I wanted them to get their legs straight. Also, I didn't want them bothering those last three eggs, in case I have another rotten one on my hands.

Here they are all dry:

Camping, so I guess they had no problem hatching. We were speculating on the size of the air cells a few days ago.
Did you have any eggs that made it to lockdown that didn't hatch. Any die in the shells?

That is a great pic.

There were times I'd walk away to use the bathroom and come back to like 3 new pages of posts. Who all is still clucking around here?
Bugglesmommy, hello, I would be new to you, I am from Jena and have a problem with chicken math, I cant count high enough to get as many as I want, I have about/ close to 100, many are olive eggers and blue layers for my hatching egg program, Welcome back
