I bury my pets.

So sorry for your loss. Even after all these years, it still hurts to lose one. I am so happy to see my old girls perking up. Now if the darn weather would just warm up & stay warm! I know it's been a mild winter compared to last year, but it's still been WINTER!

Looks like signs of development in most of my RIR eggs in the bator. I only spotted one clear & left it alone, since I am the world's worst candler. These should hatch the weekend of Valentine's day. Sweetheart chickens! I am enjoying last month's hatch so much - they are the most vigorous, curious things---when they see me, they run to the fence to see what I'm bringing them good to eat. All of them are a rich, dark mahogany red & stout as can be. I hope the other ones are as nice.

One egg yesterday, two eggs today! Pretty sure the one I got this morning was a sussex. And fertile! And delicious. :D

The second egg today was after breakfast, so I've left it in the nest to give everyone else a hint. (The first was on the coop floor again.)

It seems more than a coincidence that I start getting eggs the day after I isolate the rooster. Not sure what the reasoning would be. Poor guy, he's constantly calling and crowing. He doesn't like when they wander off the porch and he can't see them.

Ya'll, I've been subscribed to this thread. Was updated today. I haven't read all the links but thought it was interesting about storing eggs small end up.

Pam, I wasn't going to say anything but when you shipped the biele eggs one was upside down(small end up). I found it when I candled them. I turned the air cell up and made a note on the egg. It hatched with no problems.

This chick was an Assist. It won't stand long. They are on vitamin water & mediated crumbles. Other ones are GREAT .. The only problem is, I have 4 pullets and the roo is a Bantam Black N White Cochin.. What am I going to do? I thought that out of 4, the chances of a Trio were good :( guess NOT...

Are you saying that you are vent sexing these chicks? Why don't you think that the black chick with yellow on it is a black? That is how my black chicks started out, but they are blacks. It just depends on how much of the black genes they have added. Some come out almost all black from the start. Some come out black and yellow.

Terri, I am pretty sure that we ended up with a hen and a cockerel that are from the eggs that my husband got from his co worker. (RIR) They are nice and dark, but I don't really have personal experience with them. So we will be interested in seeing how yours grow up. We will only be keeping hens, so might only end up with one for her to take to the fair. But we really don't know much about the guys flock that they came from. Just that his sister (the lady we got the eggs from) says they are really big. Since yours are from nice flocks it will be nice to compare this hen to yours just to have an idea of how nice of a bird she is. The hen is already larger than the one we think is the cockerel.
