"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I would be afraid too. I would try if it was do or die. Thats great so your all set to buy your feed then.Pam
Yea. I'll be ordering soon. The scratch is 10% off and I wanted to ask you again about finishing the roos.

For two weeks do I only feed them grains or do I mix with another feed like a grower or broiler ration?

The Buff Orpingtons we have are not from a show breeder (even though the one she took to the fair was the nicest one there) they are nowhere near the weight they should be according to standard. We did weights today on most of the older hens and the ORP we kept is 5lbs. So if we were going to breed from her and the babies we are growing out we would have plenty of work to do getting them up in size. It's not really an issue for us though since they are just for the kids to have fun taking care of and show in 4-h, which is not like the big league shows. I really did not like butchering the one that we did recently. So I'm not dying to breed them, although my kid loves the buff color. It's one of her favorites. It's body cavity was narrow which made it difficult even for my hands. It would probably be better with hens that were 2lbs heavier though. But for a flock of laying hens they are great, although slightly on the piggy side. One of our favorite traits we all love about them is how sweet and friendly they are, from chick to hen. Cuddly even. We have 7 babies right now that we are waiting to see the sex on. My luck we will find someone with a stellar huge rooster and I know what my daughter will be trying to get me to do. She will want me to make a deal for us to get our ORP hens AI by that rooster.

Oh what a conversation that would be.
The ones I saw looked like small turkeys. I imagine all the feathers made them look much bigger but still. I envisioned a huge carcass underneath the plumage.

You can see my orpington pullets at the back of the flock. They're so much bigger than the full-grown hens. And not friendly, but they're from the auction so probably weren't socialized. I love them so much. We call them "basketball chickens."

morning everyone have a wonderful day....getting ready to redo the bedding in the coops as well as the chick brooder...they are getting flighty now knocking everything over

One of my new baby chicks that is two days old, I am finding with the chicken scratch and the chicken crumble feed Hardened to his bum and he is unable to poop! I am having to take him to the bathroom twice a day and running it under warm water to loosen it and I can remove it. Then i evacuate his bowls and sooo much comes out!! This is the chick that won't stand long so I think that is why it is getting it stuck to it's butt, because it is sitting more than the other babies. Uhhh, what to do??? I stop turning my eggs yesterday so I am expecting 6 more babies now. These are from my own flock and are purebred amerucanas. Excited excited excited chicken mom here

well, I lost that one overnight.I guess not enough vitamin water would have saved it. Now my eggs from my flock are hatching and I told you all, they are so healthy they start pipping on day 19 and 20. Today is day 20 and I have 3 almost pipped out!!
to answer your question on how I evacuate the bowels, take your thumb and forefinger and place your thumb over the belly button and use your forefinger to gently squeeze the very very lower abdominal area and then turn the bird around, place your thumb over the belly button and put your forefinger on the other side and squeeze very gently. If nothing starts to come out, then stop. Usually you will automatically see something coming out. You have to remember even if only a small amount comes out. It is a major relief to the bird.. I cannot say it enough, squeeze very gently. For one, two or three day old chicks, it is very easy to push their stomach out their butt. Be gentle and squeese the lower lower abdomen. Hope that answers ur questions. ♡♡

Manda, are you feeding them scratch at two days old? They can't handle anything but chick starter until they are a lot older. Put a tiny bowl of sand in their box so they can eat it. I mix mine with half of garden soil to get them immunize against Cocci. Just a little extra protection because I don't do medicated feeds. My handyman George came yesterday and finished the 2nd coop. He did such a good job. Putting down soil around it for a water break (on a slope) and 3' hardware cloth. The other half of the coop was built with netting across the top and let in too much water so he put black plastic on part of it and clear shower curtains to let in more light. It looks nice. Moved the nesting boxes down so I have 4 milk crate boxes ready for when I start getting my layers. I have the two 3 mo old black barred rocks in there now and I hope to integrate the 4 babies from the brooder soon. The barrs are so docile I couldn't let them stay with the other girls. He also put a tin roof on the 4' x 6' tiny coop that houses the XW White Plymouth Rock trio I have. Sufficient for a breed pen for now. They can get out and run around a while during the day. Later I'll move them to a bigger coop and let the bantams have it. Perfect for them. The Sebright (8) eggs are on the truck getting here this afternoon. I'm going to attempt to hatch them with my incubator and if I get into trouble I'll get one of the still air cheapies to get me by. I could NOT turn down the $4 + $7 shipping. From TX. So I have the incubator set up and running and by placing a 2 lt coke on it the rattling noise is stopped. We'll see. ha
