Got my first rubber egg this morning. It was in a big pile of poop, so I think it happened from the roost. It was already freezing cold at 6:30 this morning, so I guess it happened in the night. There was also a ...skin? Membrane? It looked just like the poop, but one of the orps started picking at it. Of course I took pictures.![]()
that the rubber egg is from a new layer.![]()
Wind egg and shell-less at the same time?
Put my RIR eggs in lockdown this morning - now the hard part of the waiting begins!![]()
Yeah, lockdown is the very worst. Day 19 is the very worst of all the days, unless you don't see or hear anything on Day 20. Then Day 20 is the very worst... Unless they're running late and you don't see or hear anything on Day 21.
I might just unplug the Turner this time, add some water and walk away.
I tried doing AI with one of the red cockerels and the more receptive black hen. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need practice. The red boys are just SO randy and the sweet black girls are like, "Run and hide"!!! They just have completely different personalities and so far those boys are striking OUT! The black rooster TUX on the other hand is so much more gentle and the black girls have no problem letting him mate them. As proven by fertile eggs and eggs we have hatched. I'm very hopeful that a big part of this issue is simply that they are young and annoying.much like teenage human boys, Lol. We decided to try the AI so that we can keep the sweet black hens in different accommodations than those naughty boys. One has her feathers starting to get torn up a little and I just feel like we are subjecting her to rough treatment that she doesn't deserve. Poor baby. Today she was outside in the sunshine and was fliting around being silly. It's so much nicer to see her being a happy girl, rather than avoiding being accosted, lol.
The one I posted a picture of the other day had been crowing SO much. Today when we're were out there we snatched him up every time and hung him almost upside down. Or I would just tuck him under my arm if I was using my hands. That shut him up pretty well. I doubt it to last after he heard me shut the back door though, haha. I'm not too bothered though. Neither one has an older roo to put them in their place. So a few more months of growing up and they should be calmer.
I hope.![]()
