Well, being relatively new to chickens, but completely obsessed, I do want to begin breeding to SOP. I figure the Surprise Box would be a load of fun. But I really, really, REALLY want to begin raising and breeding show quality OEG and OEGB.

Does anyone live close to the Sulphur area? I would like to begin visiting poultry shows or auctions, and even the local poultry swaps, but don't have a clue where to start.

There are some Facebook pages with local swaps listed. As far as shows go, i think there is one being planned in Deridder soon and the LSU show in November. The shows are great places to meet breeders and Glean some knowledge. There are also sales at the shows too. Is a fun obsession! And lots to learn.

moved the birdies into their new brooder which is double the size have to make room for the new batch which is due march 3/4th...also...got the cabinet incubator and the separate cabinet hatcher coming from gqf made the order today....also got cemani and honas reserved with greenfirefarms today as well....

best of all the news ...it might be minus 20 but everything in the house is working and not froze...shhhh i better go knock on some wood....lol

I'm driving to Pineville tomorrow for a friend's baby shower. If I leave early enough I'd like to stop by Inglewood's farmer's market. Has anyone ever gone?

I thought about picking up some chicks at Petrus, but they don't have any SS right now. So my chick fever will have to keep waiting.

I'm bummed out to travel alone, but I'm going to try my best to just relax and revel in the quiet. Or maybe I'll bring a dog with me.

We just got our first little oegb. They are still really small, SO cute and tiny. They are silver duck wing. My youngest is wanting to breed them for 4-H and she of course is going to try to breed then towards SOP. I think it will be a good one for her because they are small. The only real challenging thing I see with them right now is the dubbing. We will do it, but it will be something I will have to get used to.

I've seen some really nice oegb advertised now and then on some of the swap pages. I don't think you will have trouble finding them when you want to get some.

Inglewood in neat. My mother in law goes there and gets goats milk on Saturday when WesMar farms is there. She had been getting us honey from there too. It is delicious! We've never had anything from there we didn't like. A bit pricey for our budget, but our budget is tight. I don't think their prices are too high. I really like to support them as much as I can. But we do grow veggies here at home so I don't get things there as much as my mother in law. When they have something I like (like the hikuro turnip...... However you spell that white turnip) I just go get the seed and grow myself as much as possible. It's great to go, even just to look.

Hello itll probably be a few months before I get them but I was told the cochin bantam chicken was best bantam for egg laying is that true?? Anybody know of any other good laying bantoms ?? Any breeders on herim located in arnaudville

Hello all... Haven't been on for a while. Had a unique opportunity to purchase a rare breed of chicken. Bielefelder. From the information I found before purchased my chicks was that they are from Germany. They weigh 10+ pounds, are very friendly, sexable at 1 day old, and breed true. They are a duel purpose bird, adaptable to climate here in LA, I have seen the offspring of these birds as adults and they are wonderful birds. If you would like information to purchase these wonderful birds please feel free to contact me I will send you the info on the breeder I got mine from they have chicks and hatching eggs. I will post pics soon
