Hello itll probably be a few months before I get them but I was told the cochin bantam chicken was best bantam for egg laying is that true?? Anybody know of any other good laying bantoms ?? Any breeders on herim located in arnaudville

i feel like an a chunk of ice....spent the day putting in heat wires around pretty much every water line that i could find...got a truck load of wood so had to move that nice big pile, cleaned the chicken coop, and just got done clearing the tops of the coops from all the snow we just got...which we are still getting snow right now...it doesnt bother the birds thats for sure...the other night it was minus 37...have a great night everyone...i have to warm up and relax...going to watch a movie...tired and not feeling well....

so the mail lady only dropped me off a third of the priority mail boxes that i ordered as well....grrr...

Any of y'all using the Hatchabatch app? I'm trying it right now. I don't like that it has everything a day early, ie: I set on Wednesday so I should candle on Wednesday, but it has me candling on Tuesday. I wish it had a spreadsheet that I can enter breeds, egg weights, temps, etc. The incubation timeline is nice, but not super useful.

I have cheeping and pipping in my incubator They will probably start popping out and raising cane at 2am. Haha!

I "helped" hubby (he goes ten times faster than me) load the truck bed full of composted horse manure. Yay for organic gardening!!!!!! Then he brought wheel barrow full and I spread them. Seriously awesome and I want more! Lol!!

The more I learn about common chemical products used in people's garden, the more I want to get away from them. But I honestly only have 2 friends that I know of near me that have any concern about things like spraying roundup in and around their gardens that are for food. It sure feels strange seeing some if the advice that is dished out.

If I need grass to go away for planting, I just cover it with compost

Hello all... Haven't been on for a while. Had a unique opportunity to purchase a rare breed of chicken. Bielefelder. From the information I found before purchased my chicks was that they are from Germany. They weigh 10+ pounds, are very friendly, sexable at 1 day old, and breed true. They are a duel purpose bird, adaptable to climate here in LA, I have seen the offspring of these birds as adults and they are wonderful birds. If you would like information to purchase these wonderful birds please feel free to contact me I will send you the info on the breeder I got mine from they have chicks and hatching eggs. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Yesterday I started dividing my birds in preparation for butchering by putting them in separate sections of the coop. I didn't think about it beforehand that it would cause a rift in the pecking order.

These cockerels have got to go. They're 19 weeks old now. I'm still not sure if I have any females or not. Last week I thought I saw a female squatting then others were trying to mate her but now I'm not sure it was a female. I ask them everyday who's going to lay an egg. They just look at me like I'm crazy, especially the ones with big combs.

On a lighter note my Biele chicks are growing like weeds. I bought them a baby cake. Once the realized it was tasty they have almost devoured it.

Everyone ready for the cold weather this week. I'm sick of it and ready for spring.

Which breed is your oldest Cody? Many breeds can take 6+months before they lay. Biefeleders don't start until they are 7 months, but then you know what you have with them!
You might just give some with the smaller combs a bit longer. It would be a shame to butcher them and find females when you could have had some egg layers.

That's what I'm trying to do. These are hatchery stock barred rocks. It was a straight run of 32 birds. I'm picking out the ones that crow and the flock is getting smaller. I've got the flock about halved right now and there's definitely more "crowers" on the keeper side that need to go. I'm thinking I should keep at least one cockerel, the friendliest, to keep harmony with the girls if there are any.
