Selling eggs on face book is more marketing then saying eggs for sale for 15 bucks. Aren't SS a rare breed? Frist I take pic of my Breeding stock at their best. I post the pics of them and some eggs. Then write what makes you passionate about them. Read about the best qualitys of you breed then put them in your add.Let buyers know the pics are current.Thats cheep for rare breed eggs. I've seen adds ISO for your breed in my area. Sometimes shipping elsewhere where the market is better is the helpful when selling.You can't ship out of state without NPIP certification. You can earn more hatching and selling chicks of juviniles too. Hope I've giving you some ideas that helpOne more thing goggle your breed for sale find out what the average going rate for your breed is too.. Pam

Thanks Pam! One group I posted in was just for SS. I have a guy from Texas coming next week for chicks. What doesn't sell I'll just grow out a bit and sell later. It's all going to work out. I just hate to waste the eggs. Maybe I'll try the BYC hatching eggs thread? NPIP was on my list of stuff to do, and definitely now.

SAND -- Sand is your friend! Sand is the answer!  I had a load of sand put in my coop run a couple years ago & it was a miracle -- no more muddy puddles -- great drainage! It works! It has the best drainage out there & they love to burrow into it on sunny warm days. I sprinkle Sevin dust/DE/boric acid powder into their "dust bath holes" & I have never had a problem w/any fleas, mites, ticks, whatever.

Edit to add, we have that red clay dirt here, also.

Do you scoop your sand? Is your run cover? I ask because I dug all the black dirt out of my run (former garden) until I hit natural sand, then I put a load of sand on top of that. I started out raking up the mess, but over winter I lapsed. Now it's a slimy mess and smells HORRIBLE. The other day I was hosing off a paver on the run and accidentally hosed the "gunk" layer off the sand. So maybe if I give it a good turning? I really just need another load, but I don't have a truck or trailer right now.

Was there anyone on this thread interested in speckled sussex eggs? I posted them on fb but didn't get a response. I have them listed at $15, but I could go down. The eggs are six days old and less; I've been turning them in the carton. I'm worried about them getting old. I guess if no one buys them, I'll just add them to my HAL eggs.

If you could save some up from the 10th through the 17th, I could come by on the 18th and pick them up on my way home. I would like to hatch a few for my flock. I saw at TSC yesterday that SS made the cover of the hobby farms chicken breeds magazine. They have a full-page work up on the inside. I considered buying it, but it wasn't worth the $10 to me. But I did take a pic of the cover, to help me advertise.

Mine was just some river sand my cousin had left over from a project & gave me. I need to get some more - it's about all sunk into the ground now. I never did anything to it. We have hard red clay dirt here. Maybe if you turn it that'll help -- sounds like it's trying to compost.

No my run isn't covered.

I've sold my aging eggs! I relisted them with pictures, breed info, and prices from mypetchicken. I'm actually trading them for two dozen (and $5) EE/OE eggs I was lined up to buy from a lady in the area.

And I got 11 eggs today! So that's everyone but the two orpingtons. I've seen them jump in boxes and sit on eggs, then jump back out and sing the egg song! Silly things. So... Soon for them, I hope.

That is probably why i don't have a mud problem, i have sandy soil. But i do have a ton of fleas even in the winter, they like sandy soil. ..

DE -- Diatomaceous Earth -- it is made out of silicates - same as what goes into glass - actually the skeletons of ancient sea creatures -- it will not harm your birds or anything else but what it will do is eat through any soft-bodied insect - like fleas & roaches. I mix mine with Sevin dust & boric acid powder & sprinkle it around the perimeter of the house, yard, insides of cabinets inside -- the downside is that it does need to be reapplied if you get a hard rain.
