"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Tomorrow I've got some folks coming over to help me process the 32 cockerels I have. I locked them in the coop and took away their food this evening. I didn't feel real good about. I told them I'm sorry

and I wish I could keep them. It makes me sad. I know I gave them a good life at my place albeit a short one. Who knows they may not have lived a day longer had they not been sold to me. I'm not exactly distraught but I hope the process gets easier. It's kind of put me in a bad mood. It's gonna be a lot quieter without them around. At least I'm able to spare one of the boys, my sister wants one to put in her flock. I'm glad I have chicks that are ready to move out of the brooder to take my mind off this and hopefully some new babies to move into the brooder in a few days.

It's still hard every time for me. But as soon as they are "gone", and especially when their feathers are off, it's much easier. Then it's more like preparing dinner. I don't feel that when cleaning wild game, so I guess it's just because I get attached. But when they start lining up ready for the freezer, all clean, I feel better and better. It's nice to have a full freezer.

I'm pretty sure my new motto for the time being is going to be breed the best, and eat the rest. After all we got chickens for eggs and meat to begin with. And since we don't really have room to grow out any extra besides the few that are for the kids to show at the fair that is the plan for now. After we move I'm hoping for a different story. But this is working for us for now. Sometimes people freak over butchering a chicken if it's a roo that someone "somewhere" might want and it's cute. That is just our story right now.

My hubby had been looking at different breeds. LARGE, large fowl breeds. It should be interesting whenever we do find the right place to move what breed he decided on. Right now he is liking the Buff Brahma.

Hey out there. Anyone interested in some English Black Orp Roos and a LF Chocolate pair? They are around 9 months old. Marce Sacre, Fancy Chick, and Ewe Crazy lines.
One blk Roo is Korfus bred crossed with Breedlove lines. $20 each. I will part with one Choc hen to go with my extra Choc Roo. I wanted to keep him but my cuckoo Roo will not accept him so I have to part with one of them. These guys are NOT culls. I just don't need so many. Will take $250 for Choc pr. She is laying. Really nice birds.

Thank you Lemon. I'll be thinking about your post when the processing begins in few hours. In my current brood of chicks I have one that is an assist and he is much smaller than his siblings but he is also one of the friendliest. I know I won't be breeding him and where he is destined to go. Really enforces for me a good reason to not assist.

Hey Cody, post the ones you know you will have to cull on some of those FB groups with description and photo, someone will want him and you can make a $ or 2 instead of have be his demise. The cuter the chick the better, you have hundreds of chick people around you up there, I know, a lot of them are customers of mine, FaceBook me and I will add you to my local group and you can post there. (Elcamino everything poultry and livestock)
