"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Pam and anyone else interested. This is my best looking Biele cockerel. He's the largest of the ten males in the flock. 2011 import. Has a rather wide head and so far no side growths on the comb.
He's very good looking great coloring. Big isn't always best for future reference. But this guy has good balance and type. Type is harder to change in breeding then color. You have a good eye. He is a handsome cock. I'm liking the way mine are growing out too. You should have eggs soon. One of my younger ones has been hovering around the nesting boxes they do that when they are ready to start laying.

Here is my latest breed now no more breeds for me I'll be deciding which ones I want to breed and like. Selling any mean roo's or eating them. Flypen all my sulmalters are straight run Like Codey's Barred Rocks all roo's. So thay aren't a breed I'll be keeping. You wanted to trade to give for flock divercity. I'll be processing most. I have a younger one if your interested P M me.

This is the information that Rhonda Silva has posted this morning.

I wanted to make everyone aware that we have a farm quarantined for Avian Influenza outside of Alexandria, Louisiana as of Wednesday.
The folks purchased some quail eggs off eBay and within days of their eggs being shipped, the seller's birds became sick: On June 9th the seller, who was in a non-affected county in Iowa, was confirmed with Avian Influenza.
The USDA obtained their shipping records, which are extensive (shipped birds and eggs to 75% of the country during the 21... day total incubation period for the virus) and began contacting the people and state vets involved. Birds they shipped to 4 locations in Arizona are positive for the virus and I hear their is a similar situation in California.
The Dept. of Ag visited the farm here on Wednesday and counted everything: They are most likely faced with losing their entire flock as well as the 168 eggs in their incubator.
So, to summarize: DO NOT purchase any eggs or live birds from states that have current Avian Influenza cases. I would personally not purchase them from adjacent states as well.
Our 2nd in command at the State Vet's office has asked that I call her this morning (I run one of the 3 open poultry shows in the state). I am also in direct contact with the owner of the farm under quarantine and will let everyone know what is happening as things unfold.
The owner of the farm under quarantine has joined our club's page, the Gulf Coast Poultry Fanciers Association, and will be giving us updates as they go through the process with the state.
Here is a link about the Arizona cases related to the same seller:

In regards to the people that are under quarantine here in Louisiana........ Her husband purchased the eggs and she didn't even know until they showed up at the door. So she put them in the incubator. What a bummer!!!?

Pam, I watched this bird breed a pullet or at least try yesterday. The pullet had her tail up. It was hard for me to tell if they actually made contact. I've had the nest boxes closed off since the birds were young to prevent them from making bad habits of hanging out in them or roosting in them. Should I open them up now and keep an eye on them?

I know I'll have more questions and need advice when it comes time to picking breeders.
I culled two Biele cockerels today. One had a bad hip that made him luck hunched back.
The other was much smaller in build than the others and lighter colored. He was some what of a bully. I think he had the little man syndrome and liked to pick on others.

Okay folks here is the skinny. The folks in Iowa who are responsible for all 4 of our quarantines in Louisiana, shipped eggs or live birds to 37 states in the last two weeks.
The state was somewhat unprepared for the complexity of the situation. All the orders came through the Rock River Poultry in Iowa, but not all the birds or eggs originated there: They were drop shipped from all over the place including New Mexico and Georgia. Right now the USDA is back tracing all those sources and testing them. Plus, they are trying to identify what went where from whom.
Dr. Stacy says that right now they are monitoring and will begin testing probably today. She isn't sure if the flocks will be destroyed or not at this point. However, if we get a single confirmed positive from any bird at any of the 4 quarantined premises, the state is closing the borders: nothing in....nothing out. She mentioned doing what Iowa did. Their is a big meeting next Thursday that most of the large commercial folks will be attending. I imagine if the other shoe is going to drop in the absence of a positive finding, it will happen soon after this.
They are also pretty upset that their enhanced entry requirements didn't reach everyone. I will paste them below for everyone to review.
Additionally, they have very recently found a confirmed case of H5 low path avian influenza in wild waterfowl. Although it isn't exactly the same virus, they and the Feds are very worried about its appearance here due to the feral hog population. Pigs/hogs are the viral link between avian species and humans. If the pigs catch it and it mutates, then we will have human Avian Influenza.
Lastly, they would like to stress to please, please call their office at 225-925-3980 to report any unusual deaths or large scale illness of poultry or fowl.
Louisiana's emergency order from March-
All poultry entering Louisiana from a state affected with AI must meet the following entry requirements:
No live poultry or poultry products may enter Louisiana from an area designated as a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) infected zone until the official quarantine has been released.
Poultry includes chickens, turkeys, quail, pheasants, peafowl, guineas, chukars and other partridge, grouse, ratites and domestic ducks.
Poultry products include hatching eggs, chicks, poults, table eggs, litter, and offal, but do not include processed poultry meat for human consumption.
All poultry entering Louisiana must originate from a National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) AI clean flock or must be tested negative for AI within 7 days of entry (by antibody or antigen capture methodologies recognized by NPIP).
All poultry shipments into Louisiana must be accompanied by an Interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (ICVI) and proof of NPIP certification for Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid (P/T) clean status with NPIP Form 9-2 or NPIP negative testing within 30 days of entry
ICVI must state origin of shipment

_________________________________________________________
The first people that were quarantined were notified that they will be destroying their entire flock. Ugh! The state vet said that they would be bringing a mobile incinerator so as to make quick work of the disposal.

This is only about an hour or so from us.

I would uncover the nest boxes. I've never closed mine off and never had any hang out or roost in a nest box.they mate so quick it's hard to see. If she went into the submissive position on her own she is ready to lay any day. Those are the x w barred rocks they're cute but I think all chicks are cute. Yes the Orust are eye candy I've wanted them for a while but price was too high. I guess with AI going around people are staying away from the auction. So I got them at a decent price a long with another rare breed. Haven't had time to take pics yet.

Fly pen in a BYC member that has sumalters . When he heard I had them he wanted to trade eggs or chicks. All mine turned out to be roo's. So I am offering him one they rest will be dinner. I'm getting over not wanting to process because they chase and stress out my hens.
You should sell your excess eggs they are predicting egg shortages due to AI. Pam
