"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Boy are you correct. And that cock bird is 100% permanently ticked off at us. My thought is that is because he was raised until he was an older juvie by someone else. He was nearly full size, I guess about 9 months of so when we got him. By the temperament of the youngsters I think to some degree they must bond with their caretakers. We have been butchering between 20-25 weeks. The Marans/Malay pullet that we still have growing is getting close to laying I would think. But she seems quite a bit lighter than the boys. Maybe she is just a light weight. We plan to keep some of the heavier hens out of these crosses and incorporate them into our laying flock of possible.

So your crossing the Malay with the Marans and EE. They do look hefty. I did some reading on the "Livestock Conservancy" page after I checked your post. They are a very interesting breed.
It would be neat to have some. I wouldn't want to pissem off though.  Good thing they don't have teeth.

How long does it take to get a decent carcass?

Have you thought of heritage meat breeds? They grow fast the lay 100 to 150 eggs a year. I'm keeping a trio of each as breeders so I don't have to keep buying them. After I have that going I'll raise the new hatches grow till harvest. I'm going to try to capon in time so may have a capon for thanks giving instead of turkey. The Breese and barbazaeux are two breeds. Then their is the sumalters. Pam

Might have been a week or 2 less than that. I didn't keep good records on their ages.

I went to Christina's today it was great to meet her and Eddie..Girl has a green thumb. She showed me the plants you sent her. I bought a cutting board from the it's so gorgus I don't want to cut on it. Pam

I just saw those on their fb page! They ARE gorgeous!!!!

The banana babies she gave us are doing good too. They have a bunch of baby trees coming up around the base of them now. I never realized how quickly they grow.

Right now we are just going to enjoy hatching and eating from this large fowl rooster because he is quiet and won't bother the neighbors. He has had surgery to quiet his crow. That is why we bought him.

Now if we ever move I would have 25 different breeds on my list to try out. Haha!!!

Jefferson and Orleans parosh the only ordinance is that you cannot have a rooster. I live in st Charles parish. They have a ordinance that everyone within 300ft of your property must sign a paper stating they don't object to you having chickens. Then you have to have animal control come out and approve it.

I've completed all necessary paperwork to keep my chickens. Lol
