Jsilva thats Insane!!! Congrats on completing the red tape hoops! Obviously your commited!

Walkingwolf ive seen some keets on craigslist in Port Allen, i dont mess with them so i cant tell u quality. Then if you use craigslist or facebook theres a few groups who sell chicks, im sure you can find keets. Does your local TSC have a swap you can attend?

I'm super new to chickens. Have 6 chicks 5 weeks old. They are still in the brooder. I have 2 australorps 2 red sex links and 2 amerecauna

Boy are you correct. And that cock bird is 100% permanently ticked off at us. My thought is that is because he was raised until he was an older juvie by someone else. He was nearly full size, I guess about 9 months of so when we got him. By the temperament of the youngsters I think to some degree they must bond with their caretakers. We have been butchering between 20-25 weeks. The Marans/Malay pullet that we still have growing is getting close to laying I would think. But she seems quite a bit lighter than the boys. Maybe she is just a light weight. We plan to keep some of the heavier hens out of these crosses and incorporate them into our laying flock of possible.
So about normal for a heritage breed then.

The conservancy site describes them as having a "pugnacious nature" that gets worse in confinement.

Have you thought of heritage meat breeds? They grow fast the lay 100 to 150 eggs a year. I'm keeping a trio of each as breeders so I don't have to keep buying them. After I have that going I'll raise the new hatches grow till harvest. I'm going to try to capon in time so may have a capon for thanks giving instead of turkey. The Breese and barbazaeux are two breeds. Then their is the sumalters. Pam
I'll definitely research them since you suggested

I'm not crazy about the CX for eating. There's way too much white meat for me. Right now my freezer is full, 30-40 birds.

Looks like I'll be culling more Biele cockerels maybe next week. I learned the sprigs on the combs are a defect and a disqualification when showing APA recognized breeds.
This info at least gives me a direction to work in for breeding and how to pick the culls for now. The majority of the pullets have them and I think all but 4 of the cockerels do also.
I won't cull the pullets for eggs sake but these excess boys have to go.

Everyone have a great 4th of July!!! And please stay safe on the roads today.
