I have a mixed flock

I have RIR, BR, White Leghorn, Brahma and orpington. Oldest ones are the RIR and WL. They are about 16-17 wks. The younger ones are about 12-13 wks. This is my first hands on experience with chickens and I guess I treat them more like pets. We did purchase some CX breeds by accident since I didn't research very well before purchasing birds the first time. But we raised them and processed them, even though it wasn't that easy for us to do. We have already decided that we will cull our extra cockerels when the time comes. That is if we can't give them away to be raised by someone in need of a good roo

It gets easier to process. But I still do feel a little bad when I do it. I have to tell them I'm sorry. I know they've had a good life and have been able to be chickens and not cooped up in a commercial setting. So that does help ease the guilt

I'm actually loving the rain :) It is keeping things a lot cooler at this time of year. of course we aren't getting "Too Much" here on the coast. Ground is moist but not soggy.
Yesterday evening I actually got a little chilled after it rained and this cool front came through. Was the coolest 4th I can remember.
So glad we haven't seen 100's yet. My tomato plants are loving it.

Congrats Lemon and Cody!
Im scoping it too mire! 20 wks on the 13th :)

My ground is beyond soggy... I cant move my flock around often enough, i like to try and keep them on Super fresh grass and its just So Wet... This property holds whole Lakes of water i swear it drives me nuts.

The cool is nice in the evenings, but i need to complain that the rain is also a bust on my tan! And we often cant get n the pool :(

Some of you are so far north tho i bet the foothills drain pretty well right? I bet thats tricky but nice if you make it work for you. Whatchu do Ms Pam dig a ditch to the bayou?! Im pondering how difficult it would be!

My husband fixed our land before we built our house so everything drains to the bayou. Perk of being married to a good sub-contractor.:yesss: hope yours drains soon. Pam

Pam out of your eggs that hatched there were 3 pullets and 4 cockerels. 2 of the pullets have the sprigs. I'm not sure about the third, I couldn't spot them all together this morning. 2 out of the 4 cockerels have the sprigs also. The best looking male with a clean comb was one of the birds that died. The other one with a clean comb will be held for breeding.

Upon closer inspection I have one hatch hen I kept that has them they are so tiny on a hen you wouldn't know if you weren't looking. Now the culling begins. I sure hope the ones I bought direct don't have them. Thanks for the info. Pam

Hey y'all. Busy here. I just sold off a bunch of yound roos; I've only got a gold-laced polish pullet and a splash cochin pullet(?) left in the tractor. Then I sold some brooder babies, $2 each. Not really making any money, but making space. That's important. DH has been getting a little too concerned with head counts. ;)

Now there's plenty of room to bring home some silkies. :D

I think I've finally won The War against the Possums. I've shot four, and there's one left but I haven't seen it in the backyard since we cut the grass and weedeated around the coop. Everything's starting to look really good.

When do y'all put in your fall gardens? What do you plant? I'm thinking of trying garlic.
