In the past week I've seen 3 dead possums & a dead coon on our road, hit by cars at night. My cousin who lives across the road saw a fox. No free ranging for us right now!

I've killed 8 possums since May. One raccoon, one snake in the coop and one in the yard that got away. I've lost 6 birds (four chicks) to predators, and 11 to heat.

I wish I'd kept better track of how many I've hatched and sold. I know I was averaging 65+ birds for most of the summer. I'm at 20-something right now.

I bought this one from tractor supply last month some time. It came with a smaller one inside it, and they were $25 for both. The big one is about as long as a tomato cage. I made stock the other day that I forgot about and didn't put away and it went rancid on me, so I used the bones for bait and doused the whole thing in the stock. It couldn't resist. I heard the chickens wake up and I watched it nose around the trap, nose around the coop, then straight back to the trap.
 
I've had little ones hatching overnight. It looks like a good bunch so far. Not like the last hatch that had half of them that were over melanized and had really dark feet. And 3 straight reds have hatched this time also. They are doing good. So far the only issue I can possibly point to with hatching pullet eggs is that 2 out of about 35 pipped in the upside down position. But both were caught quickly and hatched out themselves. I just turned the egg right side up (or wrong side up in this case). Since I've been adding eggs about once a week to the incubator so if these have been hatching in the turner. I just unplug it when it's level. Seriously! Now I don't know why I filled around with all that fishing before. They pop out just fine and find a little spot to snuggle and sleep. No fuss. When they are all out and in the brooder I just plug it back in. I've been very pleased with the energy level and sturdiness of all these Cochin that have hatched lately. Haven't had to help out or cull any except for those with the black feet. Hopefully in all these that hatch there will be enough hens that are suitable for breeding next year!!!

Ugh!!!!! That is the trap that our monster coons broke!!! Twice. We fixed it and they did it again. Second time it just went to the trash. But it seriously was a big coon. I don't know if the ones this year might be smaller. I'll probably try again with a different trap.
 
Hey everyone...I have a friend looking for some preferably dark brown egg layers. Anyone have a source they can share? I'm pretty sure he's wanting some that are close to laying or are already laying.

I didn't know you lost some to the heat also.

It's been awfully hot this summer. Apparently it's the new norm, extreme weather that is. I read that it could be a cold winter with lots of precipitation with the El Nino the climatologists are predicting. One of the reasons I'm giving the Barbezieux a try is for heat tolerance. My Bieles made it through the worst of it. I did put a fan on them during the night a few times when the heat index was into the 100's. We'll see how the do next year when they're older.

Mine are older and they survived. I have one hudge hen she had a harder time than the rest. Panting and making noise at the same time during the worst of it. Pam
