We suspect it came from a batch of birds that was bought through a middle man that originally came from an auction on RBA. BUT, that is pure speculation. This transaction happened back in Spring. I was told the person/people from whom they originally came from is no longer on RBA and I don't know who it was. Again this is pure speculation as Marek's could come from anywhere. As far as vaccinating goes, I think it only helps to prevent a bird from becoming sick. They can still be carriers of the virus. No, I haven't vaccinated any birds. I haven't hatched out any from my birds yet. Chicks have to be vaccinated at day one and then isolated from any Marek's virus for at least 30 days or longer to let their immune system build a resistance. Just doing that would be extremely hard to do if Marek's is on your property. Think clean room with virus filters on air conditioners and absolute complete bio security. In other words next to impossible for a backyard flock owner.Wow, Cody thats a shame. I hope they find it was only the juvenile. Did she buy it or hatch it? I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I know the Barb's were vacinated. Have you vacinated the one's you hatched? To bad their isn't a bloodtest for it. You know the ag vet that does the NPIP might have a bloodtest for it. I remember him telling me that they only needed test for one bird from each coop because if one has it they all do. I hope thats not true. Pam
Right now I'm finding things out as I can as second hand information. I don't know what tests they used at LSU to diagnose her birds as Marek's.
I called the Ag center in Homer and they said there's two test that can be done that are very accurate. A PCR test and a virus isolation test.
