Hey, how's everyone doing? I have a question.......a guy I work with wants to buy some laying hens. I told him $25 a piece for 10 month old laying barred rocks and RIR. Is that about going rate? I also have a few SLW that just started laying.. what are they worth?? Thank you

Your price is good for my area. As for SLW it depends on hatchery vs. breeder quality birds. Pam

how much would a specked sussex chicken be worth?  they are 7 months old and laying.  I need to cull some chicks out as I have to many.

I can sell mixed breed layers in my area as good layers for 20.00 this is for birds at POL. It all depends on demand in your area. Camping had this breed she may be able to help you. Pam

Because they're a rare breed that's also available through hatcheries, I say it depends on stock. I once saw a lady trying to sell a hatchery hen for $45, and that was insane. Like I told Cajun chickens, you can always start a little high and then work your way down. I think $20 or $25 is fair.

They're worth whatever someone will pay! The markets vary regionally and by time of year. It doesn't hurt to start at $25, then haggle lower. I just sold some for $15 a piece, but they were mixed and I feel bad asking top dollar for mixed hens. Then again, eggs are eggs!

You need to look at it as poulets that are laying or POL. Also when you NPIP you have a larger pool of buyers to sell to. I know I can get higher prices in my area than others in smaller towns.I factor in how much feed etc. olive eggers are an easy mix to sell too. Back yard coops for eggs like colored eggs. I've separated my final four breeds . So in 3 weeks all my eggs/ chicks will be pure breeds. Very happy with the color of my marens eggs. The pics doesn't show true. I thought my greenfire line would give me lighter eggs turns out they lay the darkest. Pam

A lady told me the best way she's found to get true egg colors is to put them in a white carton in sunlight. It's worked pretty well for me.

There is no pic of your bird in you post to give an opinion. I retest for NPIP in February guess I better call an get a day locked in.What were you told about the test? Pam

Cajun I'm not an expert in SLW but the lacing does look nice and crisp. Have you read the standard of perfection for that breed? Are her legs the correct color, and her comb the correct type?

Now it came through. Not the greatest pic. I think you got her from a hatchery. There is a member a few pages back that has good quality SLWs. The pics were after Christmas sorry can't remember her user name. Pam
