"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Agreed! We spend way too much time and care with these birds to deal with someone like that.

Thanks Lakones it's good to come hear an be validated that I was doing the right thing. Your also right about the time and money. Last night I did get some orders from repete customers so I'm feeling better today. Thanks Pam

Does anyone have a fully covered run or byilding that the chickens stay in all the time? I have the materials to do just that, but don't know if it's a good idea or not. There would definitely be no grass left in there. I do free range pat time and feed kitchen scrapes, but is that enough? Of course right now 2 of my runs have no grass anyhow with all this rain, they're just mud!!!!

The rain had been non-stop lately. Covering part of my run was the best thing I ever did. It used to smell like ammonia for 3 days after a rain but now I use sweet PDZ under the covered part and it barely smells at all. I have a 60'x100' secondary containment that I consider their ranging area. I use the auto door to let them out into the open fenced in area in the morning. I used to free range but after losing a few birds to dogs and coyotes, I had to protect them.

I do for birds that I can't afford to lose or replace like the Svart Honas. They seem fine when I open the door they don't try to get out. I also have one with batcheler Roosters in case I lose a Rooster I have a back up. Now if either one of us are out in there area for a while I'll let them out you'd be surprised how many stay in the run. Cody's whole set up is covered. I have to put netting on the top of my legbars today my Lyonnaise Rooster jumped in yesterday so now I have to wait another block of time to make sure they stay pure breed. Pam

Sounds like you have a ton of different breeds. Can you take some pics of how it's set up? I'm looking for ideas on how to separate a few breeds. Thanks

This 4 plex we call chicken condos I have 4 runs 4 by 25 ft. We have a few other coops too. Pam

Hey Pam, did you breed the honas last year? I'm thinking about bleed through and how heavily I'll have to cull (or not) for the darkest babies. Do you process your culls or sell them? Reduced rate for culls? I don't know if I'd be able to kill something so pretty.

Cajun,
This is how I separate my breeds. I have (4) 10'x40' runs outside and (4) 6'x6' pens inside an old Morgan bldg I converted. This pic was taken nov 14 when we still had grass!

Thanks Cody, I didn't answer her back I feel the same way. I was happy to get rid of the rooster I didn't break even on that one so no not doing that on a breeding pair. On better news 4 out of 5 hens of my svart Honas gave me eggs today so I'll be starting a hatch soon. Pam

My Bieles and Barbs are really picking up on their laying also. The problem is after I eat their eggs I tend to mix German and French so no one knows what I'm saying. :)
