"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

They say we gain a little wisdom as we get older.  Well, to me, it isn't worth it.  I think I'd choose to go back to being healthy, young and stupid.  As it turned out my Acu-rite meter had the ability to read a constant humidity the whole time.  Just needed to press a button.  So much for the alleged wisdom!

My just finished homemade, Hideous-bator is ugly, not square, not level and not plumb.  But, it is dead-on with every variable I care to monitor.

My son's co-worker has a yard full of heritage New Hampshires.  They are absolutely beautiful and are laying machines. His 4 roosters are perfect gentlemen.  No aggressive tendencies what-so-ever. This young man will provide me with enough eggs to fill my 1st egg turner (41 eggs).  It would probably be smart to keep some of these fine birds but, the grandkids and I, all want nicer-looking and rarer birds.  Wisdom?

Now, I need to find a digital thermometer that reads in 1/10ths of a degree.

I am gonna get started building a hatcher.  No need to add nasty to ugly on my incubator.

I hope this confidence in the Hideous-bator is not OVERconfidence!

Brinsea spot check. Has a very limited range but guaranteed to the tenth of a degree. Pricey, but to me it was worth it.

A well built New Hampshire is a beautiful bird. This is my personal opinion, but investing your time and space in a heritage, great quality breed will give you rarer and more valuable birds than a young breed at the peak of popularity. A well bred flock of any breed here in the United States is rare and worth their money, even if it is a barred plymouth rock or a rhode island red. Especially if you find a well built line of a breed with great temperament and laying capabilities. That said, if you don't enjoy looking at them out in the yard then it does you no good to raise them. I suggest maybe looking through a collection of the illustrations of perfection of each breed and seeing what appeals to you and your grandchildren. An even better idea would be to attend a poultry show and see what catches your eye, because seeing a bird in the flesh will leave a different impression than an illustration on a page or screen.

A flock of wyandottes foraging through the yard is the most beautiful sight in my eyes. I love them as chicks, as gangly juveniles, and as matured, stately adults. If I didn't find them enjoyable, then their long maturation time and year plus wait until point of lay might have driven me away from the breed.

Forgetful, we owned a farm and my mother and grandmother took care of the chickens They raised enough for 9 children and 9 spouses and 41 grand children.. My brother loved "Banties" and unusual ducks. I've been around some mixed breed stock for years.

But, I must admit, when I saw this young man's very well-kept yard full of New Hampshire birds, I was struck by how beautiful they were. I have no idea whether they meet the SOP or not. I do know that his wife insisted on heritage as opposed to hatchery stock. Looks like she made a great call to me.

Campingshaws, $25.00 and free shipping sounds good to me. Looks like exactly what I wanted. I will switch it between the incubator and hatcher until I can buy one for each. Thanks again for some timely and good advice.

I've got five chicks! The merleraults popped out first thing this morning and their tiny crests are so cute!
