I have BBS Ameraucana chicks, Blue Swedish and Welsh Harlequin ducks. Hoping to eventually get German New Hampshire chickens.

I've got five chicks! The merleraults popped out first thing this morning and their tiny crests are so cute!

These will surprise you if you keep them. The hens are sweet the eggs start small but get bigger than expected. Mine are laying large eggs now. It took the whole year for them to become full size so they mature slow. My rooster isn't aggressive to people. He will challenge other roosters. My next hatch I'll hatch these they are cute too. They certainly hatched well! Everything is looking like a roo at this point.

The only bielefelder that hatched is a male. My RIR eggs hatched yellow just like the neiderrheiners so I can't tell them apart. And a silverudd blue hatched overnight but it must be black, because I can't tell it from my mixed babies. It's a big mess.

The only bielefelder that hatched is a male. My RIR eggs hatched yellow just like the neiderrheiners so I can't tell them apart. And a silverudd blue hatched overnight but it must be black, because I can't tell it from my mixed babies. It's a big mess.

Why do you think both are roo's? I read that you should wait three days for feather sexing. The Silverrudd Blues that are black can be solid black but most time they have some yellow on them. The underbelly and a little on the face. Their feet are usually two tone slate on the legs and to the foot. The foot is usually flash or pink in color as they grow they turn slate on top. Splash and blue ones can start out yellow so watch for blue spots as the yellow chicks grow.

Once the Neiddhiner start feathering you will notice the coukoo pattern . The poulets are darker than the roosters. All but one of my roosters followed this rule.

I'm surprised only one biefelder hatched the are pretty easy to hatch. Did you open them to see if they were quitters ? Hope this helps you figure out who is who. Pam

Thanks Pam! My mixed EEs hatch out just the same as what you described for the silverudd blue so I'm out of luck there. The EEs should be pretty big, so I can wait to see what happens there.

I don't know what my temps were like for the week I was gone, so it could've been temp related. Looks like the quitters all did do around the same time, so likely a spike I'd think.

I just have a feeling they're all roos. That's the sort of hatch it has been. I've heard that the roos tolerate heat spikes better than pullet eggs. But who truly knows.

I'll be interested to see how many are males out of your whole hatch. I hear many things about males this way and poulets another way. Some turn out to be old wives tales that are wrong some turn out to be true. Check the feathers at three days. Hope it's a wife's tale that is wrong. Pam
